Second Announcement
i-CIPEC 2008
5th International Conference on
Combustion, Incineration/Pyrolysis and Emission
Control: Eco-conversion of Biomass and Waste
16 – 19 December 2008
Chiang Mai, THAILAND
Jointly organized by:
The Joint Graduate School of
Energy and Environment King Mongkut’s University of
King Mongkut’s University Technology North Bangkok
of Technology Thonburi
In collaboration with:
Chiang Mai University Phranakhon Rajabhat University
Invitation
The i-CIPEC is a series of biennial, international conferences held in Asia since 2000 to
highlight the scientific issues and challenges and the advances made in the area of thermo-
chemical technologies for waste conversion. The first such conference was held in Korea (Seoul
2000), the second was also in Korea (Jeju 2002). The venue then shifted to China (Hangzhou
2004) and Japan (Kyoto 2006). In 2008, Thailand is honored by the Scientific Committee of i-
CIPEC to host the 5th i-CIPEC in Chiang Mai during 16-18 December. The Conference will be
jointly organized by the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment at King Mongkut’s
University of Technology Thonburi and King Mongkut’s University of Technology North
Bangkok, in collaboration with Chiang Mai University and Phranakorn Rajabhat University.
Initially the focus of attention of the i-CIPEC series of conferences was the conversion of
municipal and industrial solid wastes. However, due to the increasing importance of alternative
energy in substituting the much sought after and rapidly depleting fossil fuels and in reducing
CO2 emissions, the i-CIPEC Conference these days also cover the conversion of biomass, or
more specifically, agricultural and agro-industrial wastes. Despite the expanded scope, the core
technologies involved remain unchanged, namely combustion, incineration, pyrolysis and
gasification. The issues that need to be addressed, however, are becoming more and more
complex, covering not only the more traditional concerns of resource efficiency and emission
control, but also life cycle environmental impacts, climate change, energy security, and
sustainability. These and other related issues will be discussed at this 2-day conference.
In addition, a pre-conference workshop on Biomass and Waste Conversion into Eco-friendly
Energy is also scheduled on 16 December. And as part of this Conference, an exhibition will be
staged, offering companies and organizations an opportunity to publicize their products and
services. A technical tour will also be offered.
Additional information on the Conference can be obtained at www.icipec2008.org.

Technical Tour
On December 19, the 5th i-CIPEC Conference participants will be having a one-day technical
tour to visit the Siam Cement Group (SCG)’s cement factory in Lampang province and Ban Koh
Khoi, an Energy Conservation Demonstration Village in Lampoon province.
The Siam Cement Group (SCG) was founded under the Royal Decree of His Majesty King
Rama VI in 1913 as the nation’s first cement producer, a construction material critical to
national development. The Group has expanded continuously since that time, become the
largest and most advanced industrial conglomerate in Thailand with five strategic business
units: Chemicals; Paper; Cement; Building Materials; and Distribution. Today, the Siam
Cement Group (SCG) consists of over 100 major companies, employing approximately
24,000 people. The Group manufactures more than 64,000 product items to supply the
domestic market as well as to export to all regions worldwide. Numerous companies in the
Group were among the first in their industries to attain ISO 9002 certification for quality
management, ISO 14001 certification for environmental management, and TIS 18001
certification for occupational health and safety management. This commitment to quality
reflects the increased capability of the Group in the competitive international market.
SCG Lampang plant was established in 1994.
It is situated in Jae Hom, 60 km from
Lampang. The plant has an annual capacity of
over 2 millions tons production. SCG
Lampang has successfully utilized biomass
and waste as alternative fuels and part of raw
materials for cement production. Addition of
a biomass pyrolysis/gasification unit is being
planned.
Ban Koh Khoi – an Energy Conservation Demonstration Village, is about 40 km from Chiang
Mai, not far from the main road. The road to the village is asphalt/cement all the way into the
village. There is only one road in and out of the village. Most part of the village is green area. It
is inhabited by only 600 people in 200 households. Villagers are rice, longan and cattle farmers
with average annual income of over 150,000 baht per family. Ban Koh Khoi and the Lampoon
Regional Energy Office successfully completed a 500 m3 biogas project from chicken farm.
Biogas is generated at 60 m3 per day. It is distributed via a pipeline to about 50 nearby houses,
and utilized to produce electricity using gas engine for on-farm use. There is a 15,000 liter per
day soybean oil extraction plant in the village. Some of the production is planned for biodiesel.
A number of appropriate energy technologies have been implemented in the village. These
include efficient cooking stove, small gasifier stove, water pump driven by gasifier engine, and
biomass gasification electricity generator.

About Chiang Mai
Experiencing the merging of the past into the present in
Chiang Mai where locals are proud of the city's 700-year
history. Its rich traditional heritage and unique culture is a
perfect foundation for the development of the city.
Chiang Mai is one of the few places in Thailand where it
is possible to find in the heart of the city centuries-old
chedis and temples next to modern convenience stores
and boutique hotels. The original city layout still exists as
a neat square surrounded by a moat with vestiges of the
fortified wall and its four main gates offering prime
access to the old town. Intriguing diversity among ethnic
tribes coupled with breathtaking scenery makes Chiang
Mai one of Asia's most attractive tourist destinations.
Chiang Mai is also blessed with pristine natural
resources of mountains (dois), waterfalls, and other
nature-based tourist attractions. At the same time,
Chiang Mai residents are warm, gracious and
congenial providing authentic hospitality making
visits memorable and meaningful. Moreover, visitors
from all walks of life can collect handicrafts of silk,
silver and wood produced locally as timeless
souvenirs. Chiang Mai is a place where both
backpackers and luxury tourists can enjoy themselves
to the fullest.
