Neuro-Oncology SOCIETY NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Anyone in the neuro-oncology profession may submit to the journal announcements of meetings, conferences, and funding opportunities of interest to colleagues. Please send announcements to Oliver Bögler, Ph.D. Department of Neurosurgery and Hermelin Brain Tumor Center 2799 West Grand Blvd. Detroit, MI 48202 Telephone: 313-916-7293 Fax: 425-732-8379 E-mail: societynews@soc-neuro-onc.org in 2004. CBTRUS currently provides histology-specific incidence data on all primary brain tumors. For additional information, please contact Gayle Clutter, Chairman of BTWG, at gcc6@cdc.gov or 770-4884570. NATIONAL BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION Grants Available The National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF) is pleased to announce the availability of funds for neuroscience researchers. Since its founding, NBTF has awarded over $2.5 million in grants to researchers in both the United States and Canada. For more information about the NBTF grant program and to download an application, visit the NBTF Web site at www.braintumor.org. (Click on “research,” then “for the researcher,” then “Funding Available.”) BRAIN TUMOR WORKING GROUP Collection of Nonmalignant Brain Tumor Data The Brain Tumor Working Group (BTWG), a subcommittee of the National Coordinating Council for Cancer Surveillance, has been meeting to facilitate implementation of the collection of nonmalignant brain tumors by state and regional cancer registries. The Council, whose member organizations include NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program, the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries, and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, provides a forum for discussion of issues affecting cancer registration in the United States. Representing the clinical community are SNO members Dr. Edward Laws, Dr. Roger McLendon, and Dr. Brad Pollock. Dr. McLendon, in collaboration with Dr. Janet Bruner and Dr. Steven Moore, has worked with SEER and the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) to draft a site/histology validation list for all primary brain tumors. This list includes nonmalignant histologies from the sites proposed for inclusion during the Consensus Conference on Brain Tumor Definition for Registration (report in Neuro-Oncology 4:2, 134 –145, April 2002), held during the SNO 2000 Annual Meeting, and will be used as a tool for tumor registrars. The BTWG is working toward completing additional tasks needed for implementing data collection Help Raise Research Funds Grants Available The National Brain Tumor Foundation has developed the Angel Adventure to help raise research funds in cities across the country. Those who live in Orange County, California, Atlanta, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Denver, the San Francisco Bay Area, or the Washington, D.C., area and want to find out how to help or are interested in starting an Angel Adventure in their own community can contact NBTF at 800-934-2873.
