									Sickness/Absence Policy for Pre–Registration Social Work
Students (All Cohorts)

Expectation – 100% attendance both in University and Practice settings. There is a
requirement from the General Social Care Council that all pre-registration students undertake
a minimum of 200 days in practice during a 3 year period of study before they will allow them
to become a Registered Social Worker.

How to Report a Period of Sickness/Absence in University

1.        When you are sick/absent during University time telephone the university sick line
          advising them what is wrong with you and how long you may be off sick for or if
          you are going to miss any taught sessions, please indicate which one/s, the
          module and time of session. For the answer machine sick line in the Department of
          Practice Learning on 0121 331 7010, please clearly state your name, cohort (e.g.
          Social Work September 2008 before leaving a message.)

2.        When you are fit to return to University telephone the sick line (as above) advising
          them of your date of return.

How to Report a Period of Sickness/Absence in Placement

3.        When you are sick/absent during practice time telephone both the placement area
          and the university sick line (as above) advising them what is wrong with you and
          how long you may be off sick for. When telephoning the placement area always
          ask the person taking the message for their name, so you can remember to whom
          you passed the message.

4.        When you are fit to return to placement to telephone both the placement area and
          the university sick line advising them of your date of return to placement.

5.        Contact Department of Practice Learning if you are going to require longer to
          achieve 40/80 days in practice.

N.B. Note that any periods of sickness/absence which have not been notified to the
PLO or the university as required by the sickness/absence policy (e.g. has not rung in)
will be recorded as unauthorised absence.

The complete number of allocated PLO days must be attended for each PLO (e.g. 40 or
80 days). If you are off sick/absent please contact DPL to postpone your PLO
completion date. Please note this cannot be done except through DPL who will notify
tutor.

6.        You must complete a Birmingham City University self certification form for each
          individual day or period of days amounting to less than 7 days that you have been
          off sick or absent either in University or in practice. Self certifications can be
          obtained from the Department Office or can be printed off from the DPL website.
          Completed forms for University sickness/absence should be returned completed to
          DPL Room 426 Seacole, Edgbaston Campus. Any period requiring a self
          certification for missed practice time should be attach to the Record of Attendance
           at the end of the placement and submitted to DPL with your portfolio.

7.         If you are off sick for more than 7 days, students must supply a Doctors medical
           sick note, for University time, this should be submitted to DPL Room 426 Seacole,
           Westbourne Road Campus, for practice this should be attached to the record of
           attendance at the end of the placement and submitted to DPL with the Portfolio.

8.         If you are a seconded student, you should also follow the appropriate Agency’s
           protocol

10.        Be aware that any perceived abnormal patterns of sickness/absence will be
           challenged by your personal Tutor and may lead to the instigation of the University
           student disciplinary or Fitness for Practice procedure.

11.        Note that non submission of Birmingham City University Self Certification forms
           and Doctors Medical sick notes could affect your ability to claim Extenuating
           Circumstances at later date.

12.        Note that substantial periods of Sickness/ Absence will be monitored by both your
           personal Tutor and DPL with reference to satisfactory achievement of both theory
           and practice hours required by the General Social Care Council and if you fall
           below the required hours, you will be expected to undertake additional placement
           time to retrieve these hours or days.

13.        Note that a record of all your sickness/absence/special leave will be individually
           detailed under each heading in your final reference for any prospective employer.
