Lacrosse Australia Competitions Bulletin 1 / 2008 1 Lacrosse Australia Board of Management – Participation Portfolio Lacrosse Australia national competitions is one area of responsibility for the Director of Participation on the Lacrosse Australia Board. At the November 2007 meeting of the LA Board I was allocated responsibility for this portfolio and am pleased to have the support of Competition Managers in Victoria (Keith Chamberlain) and South Australia (Bob Hewitson). This calendar reflects changes which have been made since the draft Competitions Calendar was distributed to State Associations in August 2007. This calendar includes dates for LA Competitions and other Lacrosse Australia activities. An updated calendar will be distributed as any changes are made and when further information becomes available. 3 Indoor Lacrosse All State associations were invited to submit proposals for the conduct of an Australian Indoor Lacrosse Tournament in January 2008. No proposals were received and, as a result, there will be no Australian Indoor Lacrosse Tournament conducted by Lacrosse Australia in 2008. The LA Board is keen to ensure that Australia is represented by a viable Australian Indoor Lacrosse Team in the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. The most effective way to achieve this is to encourage all State associations to develop a sustainable State Indoor Lacrosse competition during 2008 and beyond, with a view to entering teams in a 2009 Australian Indoor Lacrosse Tournament from which the selection and appointment of Australian Team personnel may progress to the establishment of a viable Australian Team. Lacrosse Australia Competitions Bulletin 1/2008 1 It is recognised that the costs for venue hire to play Indoor Lacrosse are significantly higher than for Field Lacrosse so, to provide an incentive for States to develop this form of lacrosse competition, the Lacrosse Australia Board has agreed to provide one subsidy of up to $2,000 to each State association which conducts, during 2008, a State Indoor Lacrosse competition in which a minimum of 4 teams participate, with each team playing a minimum of 4 full games, at an indoor venue which would be capable of hosting a national Indoor Lacrosse Tournament. A detailed report providing the games schedule, participant (players, coaches, managers, referees) names, game score sheets, spectator numbers, copies of promotional material and a comprehensive financial report detailing every item of receipts and expenditure for the competition is required after the event. It is expected that details of the State Indoor competition would be promoted on the State Association website in addition to other promotional channels. Payment of the subsidy will be provided to the State Association after receipt and verification of the above information. 4 Australian Senior Championships 2008–2010 After both Lacrosse Victoria and Lacrosse South Australia advised Lacrosse Australia that they would not support the Australian Lacrosse League format beyond 2007, State associations, Australian Lacrosse League personnel and other interested parties were invited to nominate their preferred options for the format to be used in the conduct of future Australian Senior Lacrosse Championships. Based on the preferences indicated in these responses the LA Board outlined 3 options for the format of future Championships and States were invited to rank these options in order of preference. The options presented were based on the preferred carnival format and the option selected provides for teams to play 2 rounds, with a rest day before the Final. Championships to include a minimum of 4 teams participating – which is consistent with the previous Senior Championship format. Teams other than State teams may be visiting international teams, Development Teams (e.g. teams from LA Affiliate State Associations), Australian Teams preparing for an international competition, LA Presidents teams comprising representatives from more than one State, or other options which may be forthcoming. Players will need to make themselves available for participation in the Australian Senior Championships in the two years prior to a Senior World Lacrosse Championship. This will be one of the selection criteria for Australian based players seeking selection in the Australian Team to compete in that World Championship e.g. participation in the 2008 and 2009 Australian Senior Championship will be a selection criteria for the 2010 Australian Team. The Australian Senior Lacrosse Championship is the premier lacrosse competition in Australia and every effort is being made to have this event conducted in a format that accommodates teams, host organisations, supporters and spectators to produce a successful and enjoyable event for everyone involved.
