In recognition of Jim’s life-long contributions to the IEEE, The Pulp & Paper Industry Committee of
the IEEE Industry Applications Society has established the James A. Rooks Memorial Student Intern
Program. Every year our committee celebrates Jim's relentless compassion to bring young
engineers into the industry by sponsoring engineering student interns working for industry
manufacturing companies, to attend our annual PPIC technical conference at no cost. As Jim
personified excellence in engineering, so too will the next generation of engineers be better prepared
to meet industry challenges through exposure to technical papers and tutorials at the conference,
and interaction with leading practicing engineers. Proceeds to fund this initiative come from the
James A. Rooks Memorial Endowment established by the IEEE Foundation. You and/or your

2008 James A. Rooks Memorial Student Intern Program

One of the issues the Pulp and Paper Industry faces going forward is attracting new, young Electrical
Engineering talent to the industry. Recognizing this, the IEEE Pulp and Paper Industry Committee (PPIC)
has arranged with the IEEE Industrial Applications Society (IAS) to sponsor up to 4 Co-op/Intern Students
to the 2008 Technical Conference in Seattle, WA. The reason is simple – the more students can learn
about the Pulp and Paper industry and what it has to offer, the more likely they will be to consider joining
the Industry after graduation.

The James A. Rooks Memorial Student Intern Program was established in 2007 in recognition of Jim
Rooks’ life-long contributions to IEEE and his work with students. The James A. Rooks Memorial
Endowment was established by the PPIC and IAS in order to sponsor engineering intern’s attendance at
their annual technical conference at no cost.

What is included?
    Airfare
    Hotel
    Conference Registration
 One Tutorial on Thursday or Friday
    Conference Reception
    Conference Social Event
    Meals (if needed)

What are the catches?
     1. The student must be a member (or willing to join) of IEEE and IAS. (IAS registration will happen
        at the Conference)
     2. The student’s mentor from the Mill (or another co-worker) must attend with them.
     3. Following the conference, IEEE/IAS will reimburse either the student or company for the
documented costs of airfare, hotel, conference, and meals up to a maximum of $2000 per
        student.
     4. The student must attend one subcommittee meeting and the general committee meeting on
        Tuesday
     5. Preference will be given to students working directly for a pulp and paper manufacturer
     6. The student’s employer must be willing to pay them their normal 40 hour salary while they are at
the Conference (we don’t want them to have to take time off to attend)
     7. Only one (1) student per Mill site.
