Open Enrollment and Mathematics in Spring Branch.

 Open Enrollment refers to selected level of instruction: Grade
Level (GL) or preAP. It only applies when the content is virtually
identical: Geometry GL and Geometry preAP vary mostly in level
of rigor, not content. A student with a strong academic record in
Algebra I may elect and is encouraged to take Geometry preAP.

 Middle School math does not have comparable course content
options: PreAP means acceleration. A student cannot choose to
accelerate instruction without showing mastery of prerequisite
courses. Before high school, the only true open enrollment
option is at the beginning of 6th grade. A student with a strong
academic performance in Grade 5 Mathematics and a 2300 or
better on Grade 5 TAKS may be a good candidate for 6 preAP.
6th grade is the student’s first opportunity for open enrollment in
    preAP math.
How the math acceleration translates in middle school

6thgrade level A student who wants to jump from 6
1st sem 2nd sem GL to 7 preAP has not had the first
                                    semester of 7th grade mathematics.
The student must show proficiency in
6thgrade Pre AP those math concepts. Students will
be asked to take the 6th grade PreAP
6-1st sem 6-2nd sem 7-1st sem
final exam. A score of 90% will
                                    demonstrate proficiency.

A student who wants to jump from 7
GL to 8 PreAP (Alg I) has not had the
7th grade level entire 8th grade year of
1st sem 2nd sem mathematics. The student must
                                show proficiency in those math
                                concepts.
Students will be given the end of
7th grade Pre AP course exam for 7th grade Pre AP
7-2nd sem 8-1st sem 8-2nd sem math and must score a 90 in order to
move into Algebra I from 7th grade
                                level math.
