Competitive Mini-Grant Application
Introduction
The Qwest Foundation has allocated to the Arizona Technology in Education Alliance (AzTEA)
$95,000 through a Qwest Foundation for Education Grant to be awarded to Arizona PreK-12 teachers
who demonstrate an innovative use of technology with students. The funds will be disbursed to Arizona
school districts, charter or private schools. The funds may be used to purchase the following for use in the
classroom: supplies and materials, technology, or professional development activities. Any non-
disposable supplies and materials or capital objects purchased are the property of the district or school
that is awarded the grant. Funds will be awarded two times during the 2008-2009 school year. The first
round will be awarded at the AzTEA Teaching and Technology Conference on January 31, 2009. The
second round will be awarded at the AzTEA Awards Banquet at the Microcomputers in Education
Conference on March 9-11, 2009. The funds must be spent by June 30, 2009. Deadline for the January
Award: The application must be postmarked by December 16, 2008. Deadline for the March
Award: The application must be postmarked by February 17, 2009.
The purpose of this grant is to:
1. Recognize Arizona PreK-12 teachers who are using technology in innovative ways with students;
2. Increase an awareness of how teachers are using technology in the classroom;
3. Models best practices with technology integration improving student achievement.
Timelines
1. Attend an informational session on grant procedures and answer questions at the AzTEA Peak
Performance Conference, November 8, 2008, Flagstaff, AZ. (Optional Activity. Conference
Registration is Required.)
2. Mini-grant proposals must be postmarked by December 16, 2008 or February 17, 2009.
Proposals postmarked after that date will not be considered.
3. Mini-grants can be applied for in the amounts of $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000
4. Mini-Grants will be awarded on January 31 and March 9-11, 2009, respectively.
5. Panel or poster session presentations of awarded projects in progress will be made on May 2,
2009.
6. Presentation or poster presentation of awarded project outcomes will be made at one of the
AzTEA conferences during the 2009-2010 year.
Eligibility
All AzTEA members who are Arizona certified PreK-12 school teachers are eligible to receive a
maximum of one Mini-Grant award. (This includes public, charter, and private school certified preK-12
teachers.)
Applicants who are not selected for an award in January may reapply for the February submission
deadline.
Technical Assistance
AzTEA Board Representatives and Chapter Officers are available to provide technical assistance
and to answer questions. For assistance in applying for a Qwest /AzTEA Classroom Technology
Integration Competitive Mini-Grant, contact AzTEA by emailing qwestawards@aztea.org.
Award Process
The Qwest Foundation for Education Grant requires that Mini-Grants be awarded through a
competitive proposal process. All proposals will be read and judged by a statewide committee comprised
of PreK-12 educators and business leaders. This panel will determine those applications that best meet
the funding criteria using the rubric and scoring sheet included in this application package. AzTEA will
notify awardees in person at the AzTEA Teaching and Technology Conference, January 31, 2009,
Tucson, AZ and at the AzTEA Awards Banquet at MEC, March 9-11, 2009, Tempe, AZ. Award
recipients not in attendance will receive notification by U.S. Postal Mail.
Required Video Taping
Educators who are awarded a Qwest /AzTEA Classroom Technology Integration Competitive
Mini-Grant agree to participate in the creation of a digitally videotaped technology based lesson or
showcase of the project. Educators who are awarded are required to supply proper student release for
videotaping permission. Qwest will assist AzTEA in digitizing the video for purposes of sharing Best
Teaching Practices via the World Wide Web. The digital video snippet will be posted on the AzTEA
website at http://www.aztea.org
Required Presentation
Educators who are awarded a Qwest/AzTEA Classroom Technology Integration Competitive
Mini-Grant agree to participate in a panel or poster session on integrating technology in the classroom to
other Arizona PreK-12 educators at the Way out West (WOW) Conference on Saturday, May 2, 2009,
showcasing the project. Awarded teachers will also be required to present on the outcomes of their
awarded project at one of the AzTEA conferences during 2009-2010 or at MEC in 2009. (AzTEA
sponsors 3 statewide conferences: November – PEAK Conference, Flagstaff; January – Teaching and
Technology Conference, Tucson; and May – WOW Conference, Phoenix)
Required Reports
AzTEA will require from each awardee, a report on the expenditure of funds as well as a
narrative detailing how the goals of your project were met through this award. Guidelines and specific
timeline will be provided to each participant awarded funds by through the Qwest /AzTEA Classroom
Technology Integration Competitive Mini-Grant Program.

3. Do your research; find out how much the technology costs.

5. Include any in-kind services/materials/equipment from your school/district. (e.g. teacher
