                                      Dear Parents,

As a long term project, I would like your child to read a biography about a
person who made a difference. This theme relates to our literacy theme of cour-
age and social studies theme of people who made a difference. I have several
short grade-level biographies in the classroom that children may borrow. I would
like them to read the books at home during the rest of April for the homework
Reading Log and then to write a short summary to present orally during the week
of May 17th. Summaries should be written in the first person as if your child is
the famous person. If you would also like to assist your child to do some internet
research about their person to add to their report you may, but it is not required.
I encourage you to monitor any internet exploration. Children should either make a visual to use for their presenta-
tion or wear a costume. A timeline with expectations for the written report and oral presentation are attached. Stu-
dents should have a book by Wednesday of next week. Most have already chosen and checked out books from our
classroom library. I will not give any literacy homework during the first 2 weeks of May so children can work on
their reports.

Curriculum Update
Religion
We completed our study of how single people, married people, religious sisters and brothers, and priests serve
God.
Literacy
We read the selection A Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr. Children used a graphic organizer to organize
ideas about someone they felt was a hero. Then they used the graphic organizer to draft a topic sentence
and supporting statements. After conferencing with a teacher to edit the first draft, children wrote a second
draft, and drew a portrait of their heroes.
Math
In Math, we started a new unit and in Number corner reviewed double digit subtraction and addition with re-
grouping.
Social Studies
In Social Studies we started a new unit about people who make a difference.
Science
In Science, we completed experiments to demonstrate and discuss heat energy in the form of radiation, con-
duction and convection. We also demonstrated how insulation affects temperature.
