Student Survey: Computers as a Teacher's Aid FDU - Florham Spring 2005

This survey is used to determine if teaching pace is too fast or too slow for students.
See historical graph on "Timeline" sheet to review survey results.
                                                                                                                           Sample worksheets are based on

 1. Begin a new survey using the "Survey - NEW" worksheet (select tab below). Complete all fields on this sheet. (There is a red flag at the
top right corner of the sheet to remind you to fill in the class session number and date.)

 2. Prior to the survey, the instructor should make a prediction based on his or her belief of how the class will respond. This prediction
may be hidden from view by using the "Hide" control. (Revealing the predicted results may effect student response.)

 3. Students are asked to select a number to represent their perception of the teaching pace of the class. Count & record responses.

 4. During the survey the student count is automatically totaled to determine if all students have voted.
Save the worksheet and complete the remaining steps following the class.

 5. After the survey is completed data will be linked to the "Timeline" sheet. Transfer data to this sheet prior to the next step.

 6. Copy and move the survey sheet by right clicking the "Survey - NEW" tab, select 'Move/Copy' and check the 'Copy' box.
Be sure to position the copied page just BEFORE the "Timeline" tab… then RENAME the sheet as "S-1, S-2, S-3…." etc.

 7. Restore the original settings of the "Survey - NEW" sheet for the next survey… then save the changes to the Workbook.

 8. Select "Show" on the Survey sheet to compare your predictions to the actual plotted survey results. Review the survey history timeline
and click on the consecutive saved Survey sheets to analyze how the class is responding to the pace of the material being taught.
(The teacher prediction Show/Hide control should be left in the Show position following the student survey.)

 9. It is suggested that the survey be done 2 or 3 times near the start of the semester. This exercise is particularly helpful when teaching a
large class, especially when the background experience of the students may cover a significantly broad range.

Follow the instructions below if you want to use a 'Demo' workbook in an actual class.
If you are using a 'Template' version most data entry cells have already been cleared.

                                                              INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
 1. Begin by copying this Excel file and saving a clean backup for use in the event you need to restore your working file.

 2. You will probably want to delete the text and text boxes referring to demo application located throughout the workbook.
To do this you must first turn off the sheet protection on all sheets you wish to modify, then delete the unnecessary text.

 3. Following cleanup of the sheets, it is important that you turn the protection back on for all sheets in the workbook prior to use.*
If you prefer, contact me at the email address below to request a template file that already has all demo related notes removed.

 4. With sheet protection on, delete all student data on the "Student Info," "Attendance," and "Gradebook" sheets. Then, delete
course information on the "Class List" sheet, student names on the seating chart, and any remaining student or teacher notes that may
      appear throughout the workbook.

 5. At this point you may want to save a copy of your clean teacher workbook for use as a template to begin later class sessions.

 6. IMPORTANT: This workbook is designed for a class size of 20 students or less. If your class is larger, it is possible to accommodate
additional students, but formulas on some sheets must be revised. I will be glad to do this for you upon request.

 7. Fill in student data on the "Student Info" sheet, or have students fill in this sheet during the first class. As soon as all information is
complete, you will probably want to sort your class list in alphabetical order by student's last name. This should be done before
beginning use of the workbook. See instructions at the top of the "Student Info" sheet to do this sort.

 8. The workbook is now ready for you to begin recording student attendance, grades and other related student information.

 9. Note that sudent names used throughout the workbook are the preferred names if student made an entry in this field on the
'Student Info' sheet. The two exceptions are on the 'Class List' and 'Mail' sheets where full first and last names are used.
IMPORTANT: If 2 students have identical names, you must add an identifier to one of the preferred names to prevent errors.

10. For additional details on use, see comments & instructions that appear on the individual worksheets throughout the workbook.

11. Please feel free to contact me for any assistance you may need, see email address below. I would greatly appreciate any comments or
suggestions you may have as you work with the grade book, Pace Survey, or other components of the workbook. Thank you!
