									          Rusk County UW-Extension 4-H/Youth Development Newsletter – Mar/Apr 2010

The University of Wisconsin Extension, Cooperative Extension places a high priority on valuing diversity
among employees, clientele and programs. Diversity is intrinsic to the Cooperative Extension mission of
addressing the critical issues and needs of the people of Wisconsin. UW-Extension and 4-H Youth
Development complies with federal and state nondiscrimination laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Categories of prohibited discrimination include race, color, sex, creed, disability, religion, national origin,
ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status. The Civil Rights Act was passed to
strengthen programs to more adequately serve those who, for whatever reason, have not had full access to such programs. Affirmative
action is taking positive steps to assure that all eligible youth of the county are well served by 4-H programs. In doing this, particular
attention must be paid to the needs and interests of minority youth. All 4-H Clubs, 4-H Leaders Associations, and any other units
authorized to use the 4-H name and emblem must comply with the same nondiscrimination laws and regulations which are required of
UW-Extension.

A really unique thing about 4-H is it gives kids as young as 3rd grade the opportunity to practice leadership and contribute to important
group decisions by being a club officer. We have resources to help club officers learn and do their jobs successfully – let us know if
you need them. Congratulations to all of these recently elected club officers:

2010 Northern District Winter Camp
This year’s 4-H Winter Camp was great! Winter Camp was held on the weekend of January 22-24, 2010 at Camp Crosswoods in
Delta, WI. From Rusk County Sam Mahun, Ashley Webster, and Donald Webster all attended. Many traditional winter camp
activities like broomball, sledding, snowball fights, and games occurred. New activities included GPS navigation, how to build a fire,
4-H club training, and food energy. The biggest activity this year was the “Power of Wind”. This was made possible through a grant
from 3M. The youth worked in small multi-county groups to build the most efficient wind turbine out of a pre-determined set of
materials. A competition was held at the end of camp to determine which group’s turbine generated the most wattage. The groups
also wired all of the turbines together to create a “wind farm”.

Cloudwalker’s Bursting with a New Year – Fun for Everyone
Written By: Lea Franzen

Cloudwalkers of Sheldon started off this year in the lead for the most new membership enrollment in Rusk County 4-H. We’ve been
busy with activities, community service, and fun. In October we enjoyed our annual hayride followed by hot dog and marshmallow
roasting, goodies, and “Hayride Olympics” – (corn stalk jousting, volleyball, and gourd toss). In November we made Christmas cards
for each resident of three area nursing homes as well as a fleece blanket for Santa Day. It was a blast to all work together on these
projects! We also bought and assembled Army troop packages in time for Christmas for four different troops from WI. Members
available spent a day in November cleaning the Sheldon Community Center for the blood drive. December was our busiest month.
We participated in Sheldon Santa Days selling baked goods, craft items and wreath swags, and having a silent auction raffle for our
quilt. We enjoyed the community Christmas singers as well that day; some of our 4-H youth are members in that choir also. After
Santa Days, we held a Rabies Clinic for the community for small animals. IT turned out really well. To round off December we
headed to Ladysmith for a fun day of bowling and pizza party at West Cover Lanes, and our December meeting there as well. IT was
great!
January’s meeting consisted of a 4-H knowledge Olympics as activity for the day with snack for prizes. Of course our club was
represented in the annual 4-H Clover Plunge in Ladysmith as well this month. It was wet and wild they say. Presently we’re working
on setting up a chili feed fundraiser day yet, and plans are for Perkingstown Winter Activity Area – to hold our next meeting, have a
box lunch social there, and them spend the afternoon tubing down the hills! Then off to the Farm and Garden Show in March to help
prepare and serve lunch. Want to join our club? There is still time to join and you’ll even get to enter projects in the fair.

Deertail 4-H News
Written By: Bethany Schumacher

The Deertail 4-H Club has had a great start to another year. We’ve
taken part in many fun things in the first several months. Some of those
things are our annual hayride / fun night where we do a hayride to Josie
Creek and then play group games and have a potluck lunch. We have
also held officer elections, done nursing home visits, and held our
annual Hunters Bake Sale at the Tony Depot. We continue to meet
monthly at the old Tony School for our meetings on the 2nd Sunday of
each month. It has been a great start with many young members
learning new things and having fun.
