GOOD NEWS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

Students in my Geometry, Honors Geometry, and College Algebra classes have been working very
hard. In Geometry, we have been studying SOHCAHTOA and right triangles. In College Algebra, we
have been learning about exponential functions, as we prepare for a true college math class on a daily
basis. In Honors Geometry, students have been diligently studying conic sections: hyperbolas,
    parabolas, circles, and ellipses.

I would like to remind students (and their parents) to “practice like you want to play.” You wouldn’t
forget your shoes if you were going to basketball practice. You wouldn’t leave your clarinet at home if
you were going to marching band practice. Why leave your calculator in your locker if you’re going to
math class??? Be sure to bring the necessary supplies to class on a daily basis- especially test days! I
know it’s hard to believe, but I have had students tell me that they forgot to bring their calculator with
them when they took the ACT! If you practice bringing it with you to class on a daily basis, you will
remember it at the really important times!

    READ, READ, READ!

The only way to improve at anything is to practice! My students have set goals to do just that! Cassie
Lay has already read over 1500 pages this year! Vicky Cole is close behind with almost 1000 pages.
From The Princess Diaries to World War II, this class is the most enthusiastic group I have ever had
when it comes to reading! I never have to suggest that they pick up a book and read—they always beat
me to it! Mike Henz loves nonfiction as much as Addison Poore enjoys biographies (of sports
figures). Sara England and Mark Bloom can always be found reading something about animals. Mrs.
Hale enjoys seeing our class because they can’t wait to get their new books and get right down to
reading them. This is one of those good lifelong habits.

When they aren’t reading independently, they are reading and discussing the antics of Maniac Magee.
This humorous novel brings the issues of homelessness, racial prejudice, and illiteracy to a realistic
level for sixth graders. We have had some very interesting discussions about all of these issues.

With the holidays coming, the students will be setting new goals to help keep them focused on the work
at hand. With the energy this group brings to class, I am sure their reading will improve a lot by the
    end of the year!

    UNICEF WINS BIG AT WHS

Though times are tough for everyone, the students of Waynesville High School dug deep and raised
over $1300 for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, to help children throughout
the world. These funds will go to provide immunizations, fresh water supplies, school supplies, etc. to
children in third world countries and disaster fraught areas world-wide. The top fund-raising class in
this year’s drive was Mr. Whited’s. Student Council treated them to a Root Beer Float/Build Your
Own Sundae Party for their efforts on behalf of children of the world.

    WELLNESS
(Article from the November 2008 Warren County Combined Health District Newsletter)
IS MY CHILD TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL?

What do you do if your child wakes up complaining of a stuffy head, sore throat or just feels bad? Do
you send them on to school anyway or do you keep them home? The following is a list of conditions
that is offered as a guideline for parents to use in deciding when to keep their children home:
          Undiagnosed fever or rash
          Chicken pox
          Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
          Head lice
          Untreated strep throat
 Is not well enough to participate in class
It is recommended that children with a low-grade fever not be given a dose of medicine and set off to
school. The medicine is only a temporary fix and is only covering up the problem. For more
information call the Child Health Clinic at 513-695-1468, 513-925-1468, 513-261-1468 or 937-425-

ATTENTION PARENTS OF JUNIORS AND SENIORS - AFTER PROM PLANNING
    MEETING
It may seem like Prom is a long way off, but believe it or not its only 6 months away. Prom this year
is scheduled for April 25. In an effort to make the after prom a success its time to start and continue our
planning meetings. It takes lots of parent volunteers to make this event a success and to help raise the
dollars and donations needed for this event.

We had our initial meeting on Wednesday, November 12 with only the two chair people and the senior
secretary present. That is not the way to start a good after prom. We really need the support of the
junior parents, along with any senior parents who were chair people or committee members last year to
    help kick this event off.

The next planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 PM at the Mary L. Cook
    Library in the Community Room.

If you have any questions prior to the meeting, or if you would like to assist, but can't make the
meeting, please feel free to contact Angie Young, Junior Class Chair person at 897-9303, or Mitch
Peters, Senior Class Chair person at 897-5310. We need your support and hope to see lots of you at this
    organizational meeting.
