IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template IBM AIX installation instructions Insert the IBM AIX V4.3.1 CD-ROM, disk 1, into the CD-ROM drive.   For an RS/6000, set the key switch to Maintenance mode and power on. For a PowerPC, power on, and press F5 during the initial PowerPC screen. Walk through the installation instruction steps to install the base operating system. 1. At the Please define the System Console message, press F1 and return. If the display has more than one graphics adapter, it might be F2. The screen will show which function key to press. 2. At the Type 1 and press Enter to have English during install, press 1 and return. 3. At the Installation and Maintenance message, press 2 and return to get ready to completely overwrite the operating system with a new one. 4. At the Installation and Settings message, press 1 and return to get ready to change method of installation. 5. At the Change Method of Installation message, press 1 and return to select New and Complete Overwrite. 6. At the Change Disk(s) message, select a suitable disk, then press 0 and return to complete the installation settings. 7. At the Installation and Settings message, press 0 and return to begin the installation. If this is an installation on a RS/6000, at some point during the installation move the key back into the Normal position. The base operating system will now install. It will take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The system will reboot and begin a graphics display. Additional installation steps will appear in the installation help screen. Begin installation by clicking Next. Adjust the date and time: 1. Select Set of verify system date and time and click on Next. 2. Adjust the date or time as necessary. Accuracy isn't necessary as the time synchronization service will correct the time later. 3. In the Time Zone box, select Eastern U.S.; Colombia (CUT -5). 4. Remove the checkmark from Uncheck this box if your area does not observe Daylight Saving Time. 5. Click on Next. Change the root password: 1. 2. 3. 4. Select Set password for administrator (root user) and click on Next. Select Yes, set the password now. Enter the root password into New Password and Confirm Password text boxes. Click on Next. IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template 5. A confirmation message should display on the screen. Click on Next. Set up paging space: 1. Select Manage system storage and paging space and click on Next. 2. In the New paging space(MB) box, set a new value to: For large servers, 512, For workstations, 256. 3. Click on Next. Set up TCP/IP communications: 1. Select Configure network communications (TCP/IP) and click on Next. 2. Select Manually configure TCP/IP and click on Next. 3. For Host name, enter the full name of the workstation, such as test.ecn.purdue.edu. 4. For IP address, enter the dotted decimal IP number. 5. For Subnet mark(IPv4) or Prefix length(IPv6), enter 255.255.255.0. 6. Click on Next. 7. Select the proper Ethernet adapter. Use en device when choosing the adapter. 8. Click on Next. 9. Select No for full duplex mode. 10. Click on Next. 11. For Default gateway address, put the dotted decimal IP number of the local gateway server. 12. For Domain name, enter ecn.purdue.edu. 13. For IP address of the name server, put the dotted decimal IP number of the local DNS server. 14. Click on Next. 15. Click on Next to complete TCP/IP settings. 16. Click on Close to the TCP/IP setting message box that appears. 17. A confirmation message should display on the screen. Click on Next. Finish the initial installation: 1. Select Exit the Configuration Assistant and click on Next. 2. Select Finish now, and do not start Configuration Assistant when restarting AIX. 3. Click on Finish. Log on to the system to begin more adjustments. Start the software manager to install more software: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Insert the IBM AIX V4.3.1 CD-ROM, disk 1, into the CD-ROM drive. Click on Application Manager. In the Application Manager, double-click on System_Admin. In the Application Manager/System_Admin, double-click on Software. The software manager begins. IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template Add the developer's packages: Select menu item Software -> New Software (Install/Update) -> Install Bundles (Easy).... For Specify or select a software source, select SCSI Multimedia CD-ROM Drive (cd0) For Select a software bundle to install, click on App-Dev. Select Install all licensed software in the bundle. Click on OK. At the Continuing with the installation may add, delete or change files. Do you want to continue? message, click on Yes. 7. Software begins to load. 8. A message saying Please mount volume 2 on /dev/cd0. Press enter key to continue will appear. Switch CD-ROMs from volume 1 to volume 2, then press return. 9. More software begins to load. 10. A confirmation message should display on the screen. Click on Close. Install manual page files: 1. Insert the IBM AIX V4.3.1 Base Documentation CD-ROM, disk 1, into the CD-ROM drive. 2. Select menu item Software -> New Software (Install/Update) -> Install Additional Software (Custom).... 3. For Specify or select software to install, select Install specific software from source. 4. Click on Browse.... 5. The contents of the CD-ROM begins to read. 6. Click on plus-sign next to bos to fold it open. 7. Click on bos.html.en_US.cmds. 8. Click on OK. 9. Click on OK. 10. At the Continuing with the installation may add, delete or change files. Do you want to continue? message, click on Yes. 11. Software begins to load. 12. A confirmation message should display on the screen. Click on Close. Install C compiler: 1. Insert the C for AIX Version 4.3 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 2. Select menu item Software -> New Software (Install/Update) -> Install Additional Software (Custom).... 3. For Specify or select software to install, select Install specific software from source. 4. Click on Browse.... 5. The contents of the CD-ROM begins to read. 6. Click on plus-sign next to vac to fold it open. 7. While holding on the control key, click on: memdbg, vac.C, vac.C.readme.ibm, vac.html.en_US, xldb. 8. Click on OK. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template 9. Click on OK. 10. At the Continuing with the installation may add, delete or change files. Do you want to continue? message, click on Yes. 11. Software begins to load. 12. A confirmation message should display on the screen. Click on Close. The LUM license manager needs adjusting to handle nodelocked licenses, and to automatically start when the system boots. Start a terminal window. Change to the license directory with cd /var/ifor. Run the command ./i4config. Of the four choices for license service, enter 2 for Nodelocked License Server (and/or Network License Client) and press return. 5. Of the three choices for logging level, enter 1 for Default and press return. 6. For the log file path, press return for the default path of /var/ifor. 7. For the configuration of the client configuration, enter n and press return. 8. For the starting of the license server at boot time question, enter n and press return. 9. Enter y to continue the configuration. 10. Enter y to start the license server now. 11. Switch to the tab labeled Start up. The best part of the new C compiler is that the license codes are included on the CDROM and it is no longer necessary to call or e-mail IBM for codewords. Install the codes now. 1. Run the command /var/ifor/i4blt -a -f /usr/vac/c43aix_cn.lic -R "Purdue University" -T 50 and press return. Some unknown IBM wisdom has proclaimed that the new compiler will not be available unless the user puts /usr/vac/bin into their path. But, thanks also to IBM's wisdom, an optional script file is available to put cc into the main path if desired by the administrator. I do desire this. So, to add cc to the main path, perform the following: 1. Run the command /usr/vac/bin/replaceCSET. Install Fortran compiler: 1. Insert the Fortran for AIX version 5.1 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 2. Start a terminal window. 3. Mount the CD-ROM as /mnt: mount -o ro -v cdrfs /dev/cd0 /mnt 4. Go back to the software installation window. 5. Select menu item Software -> New Software (Install/Update) -> Install Additional Software (Custom).... 6. For Specify or select a software source, enter /mnt/xlf/installp. 7. For Specify or select software to install, select Install specific software from source. 8. Click on Browse.... 1. 2. 3. 4. At the Continuing with the installation may add, delete or change files. Do you want to continue? message, click on Yes. 14. Software begins to load. 15. A confirmation message should display on the screen. Click on Close. 16. Return to terminal window. 17. Dismount CD-ROM with umount /mnt. Install codes for fortran: 1. Run the command /var/ifor/i4blt -a -f /usr/lpp/xlf/DOC/f51aix_cn.lic -R "Purdue University" -T 50 and press return. Change the C and fortran compiler options to run free of a license server: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Edit the file /etc/vac.cfg. Go to the section that begins with common definitions near the bottom. At the end of the line for options, add the switch -qnolm. Write out the new configuration file. Perform the same editing session on the file /etc/xlf.cfg. Close the software manager: 1. Close the software manager by clicking on Software -> Exit. 2. Click on Exit. The default NFS service method for AIX is incompatible with the Sun. Adjust the NFS service: 1. 2. 3. 4. Start a terminal window. Type in /usr/sbin/nfso -o nfs_use_reserved_ports=1 and press return. Edit the startup file with vi /etc/rc. Just after the command to check the filesystem fsck, add the following two lines: # Enabling use of reserved ports by NFS nfso -o nfs_use_reserved_ports=1 The automounter needs additional instructions in order to start up correctly: 1. Start a terminal window. 2. Edit the startup file with vi /etc/rc.nfs. 3. Change the line /usr/sbin/automount with: COMPAT_AUTOMOUNT=yes /usr/sbin/automount -v -m -f /etc/auto_master IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template Configure the workstation to mount a servers mail directory: 1. Start a SMIT window. 2. Click on Communications Applications and Services. 3. Click on NFS. 4. Click on Network File System (NFS). 5. Click on Mount a File System. 6. Click on Add a File System for Mounting. 7. In PATHNAME of mount point(Path), put /var/spool/mail. 8. In PATHNAME of remote directory put /var/mail. 9. In HOST where remote directory resides, put name of server, with full domain. 10. In MOUNT now, add entry to /etc/filesystems or both?, press the arrow button until both is selected. 11. In /etc/filesystems entry will mount the directory on system RESTART, press the arrow button until yes is selected. 12. In Minimum & Maximum TIME, in seconds, for holding attribute cache after any modification, put 0. 13. Click on OK. 14. Wait for filesystem to mount. 15. Click on Done. 16. Click on Cancel. 17. Click on Exit -> Exit SMIT. Remove the /home filesystem: 1. Start a SMIT window. 2. Click on System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage). 3. Click on File Systems. 4. Click on Unmount a File System. 5. In NAME of file system to unmount, click on List. 6. Select /home from the pop-up box. 7. Click on OK. 8. Wait for the filesystem to unmount. 9. Click on Done. 10. Click on Cancel. 11. Click on Add / Change / Show / Delete File Systems. 12. Click on Journaled File Systems. 13. Click on Remove a Journaled File System. 14. In FILE SYSTEM name, click on List. 15. Select /home from the pop-up box. 16. In Remove Mount Point, press the arrow button until no is select. 17. Click on OK. 18. Click on OK to the ARE YOU SURE? message. 19. Click on Done. 20. Click on Cancel. 21. Click on Exit -> Exit SMIT. IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template Each of the filesystems are too small to be useful. /tmp and /var need additional space for the user to do work. / and /usr needs additional space just to manage the ECN automatically configure workstations nightly. Resize the /tmp, /var, /, and /usr filesystems: 1. Start a SMIT window. 2. Click on System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage). 3. Click on File Systems. 4. Click on Add / Change / Show / Delete File Systems. 5. Click on Journaled File Systems. 6. Click on Change / Show Characteristics of a Journaled File System. 7. Select /tmp from the pop-up box. 8. In SIZE of file system (in 512-byte blocks), put 128000. 9. Click on OK. 10. Click on Done. 11. Click on Cancel. 12. Click on Change / Show Characteristics of a Journaled File System. 13. Select /var from the pop-up box. 14. In SIZE of file system (in 512-byte blocks), put 128000. 15. Click on OK. 16. Click on Done. 17. Click on Cancel. 18. Click on Change / Show Characteristics of a Journaled File System. 19. Select / from the pop-up box. 20. In SIZE of file system (in 512-byte blocks), put 64000. 21. Click on OK. 22. Click on Done. 23. Click on Cancel. 24. Click on Change / Show Characteristics of a Journaled File System. 25. Select /usr from the pop-up box. 26. In SIZE of file system (in 512-byte blocks), put the current value already there plus 64000. 27. Click on OK. 28. Click on Done. 29. Click on Cancel. 30. Click on Exit -> Exit SMIT. Add the /usr/local filesystem: 1. Start a SMIT window. 2. Click on System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage). 3. Click on File Systems. 4. Click on Add / Change / Show / Delete File Systems. 5. Click on Journaled File Systems. 6. Click on Add a Journaled File System. 7. Click on Add a Standard Jornaled File System. 8. Select rootvg from the pop-up box 9. In SIZE of file system (in 512-byte blocks), put 400000. 10. In MOUNT POINT, put /usr/local. IBM AIX 4.3 Installation Template 11. In Mount AUTOMATICALLY at system restart?, press the arrow button until yes is select. 12. Click on OK. 13. Wait for the filesystem to create. 14. Click on Done. 15. Click on Cancel. 16. Click on System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage). 17. Click on File Systems. 18. Click on Mount a File System. 19. In FILE SYSTEM name, click on List. 20. In the FILE SYSTEM name list, select the entry for /usr/local. 21. Click on OK. 22. Wait for the filesystem to mount. 23. Click on Done. 24. Click on Cancel. 25. Click on Exit -> Exit SMIT. Increase the number of logins: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Start a SMIT window. Click on System Environments. Click on Change / Show Number of Licensed Users. In Maximum number of FIXED licenses, put 50. Click on OK. Click on Done. Click on Cancel. Click on Exit -> Exit SMIT. Modify the default PATH variable: 1. Start up a terminal window. 2. Enter vi /etc/environment and press return to edit the system environment file. 3. Add the following to the front of the PATH variable: /usr/local/bin:/usr/opt/bin:... And put "dot" at the end of the path. Reboot the system to install all of the changes made to the system. 1. Enter reboot and press return.
