Alan and Julie Faneca Alan Faneca is a six-time All-Pro and eight-time NFL Pro Bowl selection and a New York Jets offensive lineman. Prior to joining the Jets, Alan played with the Pittsburgh Steelers for nine years and was a member of the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL championship team in 2006. He is also a well-known advocate for epilepsy, a condition Alan was diagnosed with at age 14. Alan’s first seizure occurred on Christmas Eve in 1990, while he was at his great-grandparents' house in Texas. Following his seizure, Alan went to see his physician and was diagnosed with epilepsy. He works closely with his neurologist to manage his illness and although he has epilepsy, his football career has thrived. Alan has been determined to not let epilepsy stand between him and his dreams. Alan’s wife Julie sees the effects a seizure disorder has on her husband and also copes with the impact seizures have on their 3-year-old daughter, Anabelle. Anabelle’s seizures are a result of a congenital condition known as Sturge-Weber syndrome, which she was diagnosed with at age one. Both Alan and Annabelle’s conditions are managed using medications. Alan and Julie are both actively involved with epilepsy, Sturge-Weber and breast cancer organizations. Together they have lobbied for legislation to ensure that families get the respite care they need for their children and have hosted fundraising events to benefit the Hunter Nelson Sturge-Weber Center. Additionally, Julie sits on the panel at The Child Neurology Patient Advocacy Day Event, and Alan does extensive work with the Epilepsy Foundation, such as participating in the educational podcast called "Speaking Out for Epilepsy.” On March 28, 2009, Alan and Julie will participate in the National Walk for Epilepsy in Washington, D.C. Alan and Julie Faneca are spokespeople for Ortho-McNeil Neurologics®, Division of OrthoMcNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
