               Values of endoscopic retrograde brush cytology and
                           endoscopic retrograde forceps biopsy in the
                                      diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma

        Abstract: Objective To evaluate the values of endoscopic retrograde brush cytology (ERBC)
        and endoscopic retrograde forceps biopsy (ERFB) in the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma. Meth-
        ods 30 patients with cholangiocarcinoma confirmed by operation or clinical follow-up were checked
        with ERBC, ERFB and the combination of ERBC and ERFB. Results The positive rate was
        36.7% by ERBC, and 43.3% by ERFB, and there was no statistical significance in the positive rates
        between the two methods (χ2 =0.278, P =0.598). The positive rate was 64.1% by the combination
        of ERBC and ERFB, and there was statistical significance between the combination methods and
        ERBC (χ2 =4.267, P =0.039), but there was no statistical significance between the combination
        methods and ERFB (χ2 =2.411, P =0.121). Conclusion The combination of ERBC and ERFB
        can improve the positive rate and has great value in the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma.
