GKSS scientists refute argument of climate sceptics

Scientists at the GKSS Research Centre of Geesthacht and the University of Bern have investigated the
frequency of warmer than average years between 1880 and 2006 for the first time. The result: the observed
increase of warm years after 1990 is not a statistical accident. The results will now be published in the journal
„Geophysical Research Letters“.

                      Focus on climate change – GKSS Annual Meeting in Kiel

                      On 19 June, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest non-university research institute, GKSS, held
                      its Annual Meeting at the IfM-GEOMAR facility in Kiel. The event, which was attended by
                      around 250 participants, was opened by Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Science,
                      Economics and Transport, Dietrich Austermann. In his opening speech, the minister
                      once again expressed his delight about the great research work conducted by the
                      Research Centre’s approximately 800 employees in Geesthacht.

                      Hamburg’s citizens regard climate change as a great threat

                      61 per cent of Hamburg’s citizens believe climate change to be a great, or very great
                      threat to the city, citing storm surges and flooding as possible climate-related natural
                      disasters. This is the result of the forsa Study, which was commissioned by the scientists
                      from the GKSS-Research Centre in Geesthacht.

                      Sustainable coastal protection strategies for the Wadden Sea

                      Scientists, conservationists and representatives of administrative bodies in Denmark,
                      the Netherlands and Germany recently took part in an international workshop which
                      focused on coastal protection and restoration measures in the Wadden Sea in the
                      context of climate change. The event was organized by scientists from the German
                      office of ENCORA, a European platform for coastal research. ENCORA Germany is
