GREAT NECK ARTS CENTER PRESENTS WEEK-LONG ELI WALLACH FILM HOMAGE IN MARCH
TRIBUTE KICKS OFF WITH SNEAK PEEK OF "THE HOAX"
(February 21, 2007) Eli Wallach's career in film is the focus of a mini retrospective that unspools at the Great Neck Arts
Center from Saturday March 24 to Friday March 30. The weeklong tribute, a special presentation of the Center's highly
acclaimed Furman Film Series, features four of Wallach's all-time favorite films from the late 50's to the mid-60's, plus
an exclusive pre-release screening of the highly anticipated "The Hoax" starring Richard Gere. "The Hoax" details the
author Clifford Irving's multi-million-dollar publishing scam in which he passed off as authentic a bogus manuscript
about Howard Hughes. In one of his trademark colorful roles Wallach portrays the shadowy Howard Hughes svengali
Noah Dietrich. "The Hoax" opens nationwide in April.
The Wallach tribute gets under way with "An Evening with Eli Wallach" on Saturday March 24 at 7pm. This opening
event, taking place at the Clearview Squire Cinema, 115 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck, consists of a screening of
"The Hoax," followed by a Q&A moderated by the former Time Magazine critic Stefan Kanfer with Mr. Wallach and a
catered cocktail reception. Anne Jackson will also attend. Tickets for "An Evening with Eli Wallach" are $35 general
admission ($50 for priority seating). For information call 516/829-2570 or visit www.greatneckarts.org.
The four retrospective films -- all screening at The Great Neck Arts Center's Doris Weinstein Playhouse, 113 Middle Neck
Road -- are as follows: "The Magnificent Seven" from 1960 (Sunday March 25 at 2pm); Wallach's personal all-time fa-
vorite film "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" from 1966 (Sunday March 25 at 6pm); "The Line-Up" from 1958 (Friday
March 30 at 6pm); and the 1961 classic "The Misfits" (Friday March 30 at 8:15pm). Tickets for the four retrospective
films are $5, general admission.
In a career spanning over 60 years, the Tony Award-winning stage and screen legend Eli Wallach, a Brooklyn native,
has appeared and starred in (88) feature films. One of the earliest members of the famed Actors Studio, Wallach is
known for his blazingly honest, earthy, human and often enigmatic portrayals. Appearing with Marlon Brando, Paul
Newman, Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck and Henry Fonda, Wallach has exerted an indelible impact
on American cinema. In 1951 he and co-star Maureen Stapleton won Tony Awards for their work in the 1951 break-
out hit by Tennessee Williams "The Rose Tattoo." He has appeared on film and on stage in numerous productions with
his wife of 58 years Anne Jackson. Wallach's memoir, "The Good, the Bad and Me," was published in 2005 by Har-
court Press.
The Don Siegel-directed crime thriller "The Line-Up" (starring Wallach as the Killer!), the John Sturges-directed "The
Magnificent Seven," the John Huston valedictory "The Misfits" and the Sergio Leone masterpiece "The Good, the Bad
and the Ugly" are four of Wallach's all-time favorite films.
The Furman Film Series, established in 1995, is known for presenting the Long Island premieres of recently released
films that would not otherwise be seen outside of New York City, as well as sneak peek screenings of highly anticipated
films prior to their theatrical release dates. The 2006-2007 series has already shown two Israeli films -- "Campfire," and
"Storm of Emotions" -- Claude Chabrol's "The Bridesmaid," the Oscar-nominated "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Bobby," all seen
prior to their US theatrical releases.
