The festival will comprise of a wide array of films, including World, North American, Canadian and Toronto premieres. Directors in attendance will introduce screenings and participate in audience discussions. The TPFF is joining a year-long series of events to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Nakba. The Nakba (“the catastrophe” in Arabic) refers to the 1948 expulsion of the indigenous population from Palestine. The TPFF welcomes audiences of all backgrounds to experience the vibrant heritage, resilience, and collective identity of the Palestinian people, while celebrating film as an art form and means of expression. The films, produced by Canadian and international filmmakers, will showcase the diverse stories and perspectives of Palestinians and their dynamic history, heritage and culture. Films will explore a wide range of themes from diasporic identity to environmental crisis to the roles of women in Palestinian society. The festival is being launched with a contest for Toronto-based youth filmmakers. Participants from all communities are being asked to “Show Us Your Toronto” by submitting short films about how they define themselves as a Torontonian. Winning entries will be debuted before the screening of feature films. The TPFF invites filmmakers to visit www.tpff.ca to learn how to submit their films for consideration for the festival or the youth contest. Members of the public can also register online to receive festival updates.
