NYC electro-glam outfit NAKED HIGHWAY returns with their new single "Shorty the Pimp"
2007 was a landmark year for NYC-based electro-glam outfit NAKED HIGHWAY. Not only did the group embark on their first European tour, but their video "Better Off Naked" received heavy rotation in the States on LOGO and MTV-U and was nominated for several awards. The group returns with a new single "Shorty the Pimp" featuring remixes by SWEET RAINS, LOA, DE:TECH and JESUS M. The "Shorty the Pimp" video was directed by SASHA SANTIAGO (Rufus Wainright, Kaki King). "Shorty the Pimp" is a departure from the aggressive vocals and beats from last year's underground club smash "Better Off Naked," but is a sound that is distinctly Naked Highway. The group moves away from it's overtly new wave rock influences to more of a pop-meets-dance sound sprinkled with a touch of R&B. It's the result of lead singer/ songwriter Sy Boccari's musical collaboration with bi-coastal rapper BNS. "BNS and I are sort of an odd couple from very different musical backgrounds," explains Boccari. "I took him to all my spots in NYC so he could absorb what Naked Highway is about and we started writing from there. It would be very easy to churn-out another 'Better Off Naked' but since 'Shorty' is a different style & tempo and sung in completely different range of my voice, it's shows how much musical depth Naked Highway is capable of!" NYC-based production team Sweet Rains, who produced Amber's Top 5 Billboard Dance Hit Melt with the Sun, along with De:Tech, LOA and Jesus M provide remixes for the single. "We met De:Tech on our European tour and were thrill to find out that he was a Naked Highway fan. He took 'Shorty' to the dancefloor!" says Boccari. If De:Tech took 'Shorty' to the dancefloor, then LOA and Jesus M took him to the after-party with a pair of laidback dub and electrorock remixes. However, it's the Sweet Rains mix that is sure to leave listeners begging for more. "Sweet Rains did such a great job on 'Better Off Naked' we were excited to work with them again. We even used their mix for the video!" From a rainy night under the Manhattan Bridge to a seedy Brooklyn house party, from the restroom of a leather bar to the rooftops in the projects, the Shorty the Pimp video, like the song, is an ode to old New York's party lifestyle. "Since all current members of Naked Highway are native New Yorkers," says Boccari, "we decided to feature scenes from the city that aren't as glossy as what Hollywood would like you to believe. It's not all Carrie Bradshaw baby! Lots of people talk about the ghetto and film their videos on catered air-conditioned sets, but we shot the video in the real live ghetto and almost got jacked!" Directed by SASHA SANTIAGO (Moonshine Films), the video features the next wave of NYC club icons including go-go darlings Ariel M. Screw-Up, Joey Kipp & Bollywood Barbie, DJ Kevin Graves, rock photographer Jackie Roman, singer Kira Nathaniel (Double Standard) and comedienne Lara Yaz. The full five-track Shorty the Pimp EP is available for immediate release to radio/club DJs and to the press. A digital single is currently available North America, Europe, Australia and Japan on all major digital download stores, including iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon etc. The music video is already set to air on various networks, including LOGO and MTV-U in the US.
Naked Highway currently holds two DJ residencies in New York City, and will play several one-off live dates in North America before embarking on full tour next year.
