September 2006 REPUBLICAN REPORTER A Race to the Finish Line! Published by the Dallas County Council of Republican Women Serving Republicans since 1955 www.dccrw.org Member Clubs: Bentwood RW • Dallas Downtown RW • Dallas Republican Career Women • Dallas Star First Ladies RW • First RW • Garland RW• Irving RW • Lake Highlands RW • Mesquite RW Northwood RW • Park Cities RW • Preston West RW • Richardson RW • Westlake RW • White Rock RW Our Special Guest at the DCCRW Meeting is Tony Aguilar “Texas Tide” Tuesday, October 3 6:30 p.m. socializing; 7:00 p.m. program GOP Headquarters 10100 N. Central Expwy, Suite 175 Anthony “Tony” Aguilar received his MS from Texas A&M University-Commerce and spent more than 12 years working in the educational system of Dallas ISD. In his new book, Texas Tide: A Blue Print of the Future And How to Survive the Tide, Flowing North of the Rio Grande River, Aguilar details the political history of Dallas and the rising tide of Hispanic immigrants in Texas from personal experiences in an impoverished and violent neighborhood to his political race for the House of Representatives. During the formative years of Dallas, the Hispanic population moved in circles that united and developed as a uniform society, building and molding the community to reach out and redefine themselves. But over the years, this trend slowly subsided. By uniting and bridging our differences, we can better appreciate today's increasingly misunderstood Hispanic culture. He also discusses political trends and shifts, and customs in various communities including:  The birth of the Tejano  The era of the dead horse   The flashback movement Illegal immigration Aguilar addresses the faults and possible shortcomings that await political leaders with regard to the increasing Hispanic population. He also demonstrates the influence of family and tradition in modern politics. The political memoir Texas Tide serves as a survival guide and road map to success for anyone interested in entering or continuing in politics in the Lone Star state or throughout the American Southwest. Our Republican future depends on it! 2006 DCCRW Officers and Directors President, Deborah Brown deborah@nigelbrown.com PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “There is no election year with more at stake than this year. 62 Judicial positions are up for re-election and it will be critical that we support the numerous candidates in their bid for election and re-election.” The officials of the Republican Party of Dallas County have asked that donations be made to the Judicial Initiative, a common account that will fund advertising, yard signs, push cards and other efforts geared toward election of the entire slate of Republican judges. Many judges cannot do by themselves what this initiative can do for the whole group so it is critical that we work to raise funds for the Judicial Initiative. The Republican Women have already stepped up to the challenge to donate to the fund with thanks going to the following clubs for their contributions: Preston West RW, Westlake RW, Mesquite RW and Park Cities RW. Thank you for supporting this very important initiative! The Dallas County Council of RW has also contributed to the fund. Friends and family can be urged to contribute as well. Checks should be made to Dallas County Republican Party with the memo line noted “Judicial Initiative” and sent to: Dallas County Republican Party - 10100 N Central Expwy, Suite 175 – Dallas, TX 75231. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the Victory Center Opening on Labor Day weekend. All summer long, I was asked when everything was going to get started. Now it has started! It began with a huge opening crowd and Congressman Pete Sessions kicking it off. As of this writing, the volunteers for the Victory Center have been sparse so it will be critical to keep the center filled with volunteers. These are easy calls at the phone bank and easy walks in the city. Please remember that this does not consist of trying to convert any voters. It will simply be to identify the Republicans voters and get them out to vote AND to vote straight Republican! With the ballot estimated to be numerous pages long, there will be Vice President, Paige McAleer mcaleer_elizabeth_p@lilly.com Recording Secretary, Clare Gates cgates@mail.com PAC Treasurer, Pam Thomas pt5000@aol.com Newsletter Editor, Rebekah Hamilton Kay rebekah_david2003@yahoo.com Corresponding Secretary, Anita Conrad clffbigcc@juno.com Director of Programs, Martha Anderson mc-anderson@charter.net Director of Campaign Activities, Susan Fischer fischergop@sbcglobal.net Director of Membership, Lucie Weaver luciebw@sbcglobal.net Director of Legislation and Resolutions, Janet Clesi jclesi@sbcglobal.net Director of Fundraising, Ruth Barnard ruthfbarnard@aol.com Director of Projects, Joann Messina joann@pdsaucton.com Director of Publicity, Karen Boykin karen.boykin@sbcglobal.net Director of Communications, Jan Woody jwoody@txusa.com Historian, Annette Ratliff hcjc1234@aol.com annette.ratliff@senate.state.tx.us Hospitality, Glee Huebner glee@hueb.net Parliamentarian, Barbara Foreman barfore@aol.com Outreach, Cynthia Jenkins Ctjrepublican4texas@yahoo.com EARLY VOTING INFORMATION October 23 – 27: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. October 28: 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. October 23 – 27: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. October 30 – November 3: 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. voter fatigue like never before! Please volunteer as much as you can and invite your friends. The time is so short now! Our Republican Women have been busy raising funds and awareness! Park Cities RW planned a huge picnic for candidates and officials; Mesquite RW held a fabulous fashion show with about 300 in attendance; Dallas Star RW held a delicious spaghetti dinner; Bentwood RW honored out troops with a party and silent auction at a Frisco ranch. Thank you for your spirit and enthusiasm! Looking forward to celebrating Victory in November! Best regards, – – – – – – – – – – – – Deborah Brown While we‟re electing Toby Shook as District Attorney, we must also elect judges who believe in strong law enforcement. As Toby tells voters in his speeches, Republican judges and judicial candidates are the most qualified. The GOP ticket, especially our 41 local Republican judicial candidates with shockingly unqualified Democrat opponents, need your help NOW. This year your help – and your straight ticket vote – really matters. In 2004, the Democrats out straightticket voted the GOP by almost 13,000 votes, a huge deficit to make up at the bottom of a 19-page, 104-candidate ballot. When GOP voters do not vote straight-ticket and do not go all the way down the ballot, we effectively hand votes to the Democrats whose voters blindly vote straight ticket. We MUST close the straight-ticket gap or we will face a Democrat courthouse on November 8th. There are also THREE state representatives in fierce battles: Kirk England, Tony Goolsby and Bill Keffer who need and deserve our support. Do you want Democrat judges in our courthouse who: – Tell supporters he is hoping to “win the lottery” by defeating an incumbent GOP judge? – Refer to 2006 as a “roulette” campaign – they figure they might as well take a chance they‟ll be swept in by Democrat straight ticket voting? OUR GOP JUDGES Is not certified and thus not qualified to represent felony criminal defendants in the court for which he is running? Represents the pornography industry? Fails to show up for hearings, mediations, etc. leading to case dismissals for want of prosecution, which then re-files, clogging courts and adding to court costs? Fired her court reporter when she disputed whether the judge had legally disclosed to defense attorneys a bailiff‟s contact with jurors in an asbestos case and who has been reversed by the 5th Court of Appeals in 10 of 19 cases heard? Have never tried cases in the civil courts for which they are running? Does hearings and depositions but have never tried a case to a verdict? Has never filed a probate or mental illness case and is running for a bench that only focuses on these cases? Has been „attorney of record‟ for a client only once? Were rated “Not Qualified” at least twice by the Committee for a Qualified Judiciary (multiple candidates) Were fired or asked to resign from the Dallas Public Defender‟s Office (multiple candidates) Was sanctioned by the Dallas Bar Association Grievance Committee Are plaintiff‟s and personal injury lawyers whose finance reports are dominated by donations from major plaintiff‟s firms in Dallas and across Texas? The next time a friend or relative says “I can‟t vote straight ticket GOP, I don‟t know these candidates…” YOUR reply should be, “Yes you DO know them, they are your REPUBLICAN candidates.” If your friends want to know more about our candidates, please send them to www.dallasgop.org and ask them to click on “Candidates.” They will find bios and photos of our very qualified and experienced candidates and links to candidate web sites! Our judges need you at the Victory Center! The best way to help these candidates is by lending your time and energy to the coordinated campaign for ALL GOP candidates at Dallas Victory 2006. See you at the Victory Center! -Beth Anderson Republican Election Night Watch Party Once we ALL Work Hard for our GOP Candidates, Let’s All Gather at the Radisson Hotel on E.
