Tau Beta Pi Candidates
Character Reference Letter
Membership in Tau Beta Pi is based on two criteria. First is distinguished scholarship. The student
must be in the top 1/8th of the junior class, top 1/5th of the senior class, or top 1/5th of the
graduate students who are at least halfway through their programs.
The second criteria is exemplary character. A Tau Beta Pi member must have personal integrity, a
wide range of interests, adaptability, and be a participant in university and community activities.
We will have activities over the semester that will help in our evaluation of the second criteria, but
we are also asking for your assistance. We are asking for a letter of reference that addresses any
aspects of these character issues for this student. This letter will be read by current Tau Beta Pi
members (largely the officers) when new members are elected from the candidates. After the
election (around the first of April), these letters will be shredded.
Please address your letter to
Mr. Mehdi Dashti
President, Texas Eta Chapter
Tau Beta Pi
The letter should be in a sealed envelope, and it can be sent by campus mail to the office of the
Dean of Engineering (Box 19019) or placed in the Tau Beta Pi mailbox in the dean’s office on the
6th floor of Nedderman Hall.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Jim Williams in Civil Engineering, who is our chief
advisor, at <firstname.lastname@example.org>.
