THE DUNTON BASSETT NEWS
January 2010
Issue 33
It seems a long time ago but I hope that you all had a good Christmas and peaceful New Year!
One thing that I must mention partly with my Neighbourhood Watch hat on, is that there currently
seems to be quite a spate of car break ins, burglaries and a little vandalism, which is all very upsetting
to those who it affects, so please be on your guard! Do NOT leave anything in view in your car, if you
are out of your house in the evening leave a light on, if you hear of any disturbance day or night, ring
the police, with a little thought we can all make it much harder for those who have no respect for our
property and are looking to steal it! If you do want to report any anti social behavior but are worried
about repercussions, do not worry as all information is kept strictly confidential as to the source of it.
On a much lighter note this year sees the celebrations of our church having a minister for 800 years!
The church is planning to hold various functions throughout the year for all of us to enjoy and share with
them so keep an eye out for more information of what is happening and when! It all starts at Easter
with the church being open to view the Easter Flowers.
Community Group and Community Carols
Following the success of the carols on 20 th December – we were even lucky with the
Christmassy weather - there will be a meeting at The Elwells on Friday 5th February at 7pm to
discuss improvements for 2010 and the possibility of doing something in the summer.
Anyone who took part on 20 th December, or who didn’t but still wants to sing, please ring Ann
Fuchs on 202370.
Women’s Institute
Members and guests of Dunton Bassett W.I. enjoyed an amusing talk by Jane Barnes as part of
their December meeting. Jane's talk was entitled "Tales from a farmer's wife" and was just that,
explaining a little of life on a dairy farm supplying milk to a nearby Stilton cheese maker. Several
members also took part in a recent "wet on wet" watercolour workshop which the W.I. had
organised in Dunton Village hall.
On January 12, the group celebrated its 60th birthday with a meal in the village hall. County
Chairman Rosemary Heyes was guest of honour, and Dougie Wright gave an amusing talk on his
life as a session drummer with, among others, The John Barry Seven. The group's next meeting on
9th February will include a talk on Aromatherapy. Visitors and new members are always welcome
to attend the meetings, which take place in Dunton Bassett village hall on the 2nd Tuesday of the
month. The talks start at 8pm after a business meeting.
Police Introduction from PC 654 Joe Watts
I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your new beat officer covering Dunton
Bassett. I know how highly Henry Henderson was regarded and I hope to build on his hard work
and commitment to you. I have recently joined the team and along with PC Adam Dewfield &
PCSOs Neil Patel and Martin Doyle we will deliver a professional and quality service to the beat. I
bring eight years Police experience to the area, in a variety of roles, and I am keen to understand
your policing requirements and needs.
I look forward to meeting you and working together in the future. Please don’t hesitate in
contacting me, I would be more than happy to come along to village events / clubs / meetings.

Please could you let me know of any change of contact details or new roles within the village?
Happy New Year from your Neighbourhood Policing Team
Parish Council
Just a reminder regarding the change of Parish Council Meetings to include an extra meeting just
for any planning applications.
These meetings, if required, will be scheduled every other month (next one Feb) on the First
Tuesday. Meeting Agendas will be posted on Notice-boards as usual.
Notices of Planning Applications will be posted on to the notice-board opposite the Post Office.
All Saint’s Church
We have been floodlighting the church during Advent with the help of a donation from a parishioner
to whom we are grateful. The Parochial Church Council decided that floodlighting should mark
Advent; the 4 weeks of preparation for the coming of Jesus and Epiphany which ends on 6 th
February, the presentation of Christ in the temple – traditionally a festival day when candles were
blessed.
Several people have commented on how nice it is to illuminate the church during these darkest
evenings. If you wish to see the church floodlit this year at Advent and Epiphany and defray the
cost, please speak to the wardens, Carol Roberson or John Hurford.
The New Morning service on the 3rd Sunday each month is proving popular, engaging the
congregation in a more modern style of service. Please do join us. We still open the church on the
2nd & 4th Sundays for quiet prayer when a full service is not held here, though there are services
throughout the benefice.
Over 60’s Christmas Party
As one of the recipients of the hospitality given to the over 60's at their Christmas party, may I
belatedly give our thanks to Jim Archer & his team who, with the school, contributed to a splendid
afternoon of entertainment, refreshments & presents . A fine example of working within the
community. Millie Smith.
Broughton Browsers Book Group 2010
The group meets at Broughton Astley Library on the first Thursday of the month from 5.45pm to
6.45pm.The book list so far for this year is :
'Burning Worm' by Carl Tighe; 'After Rain' by William Tremain;'Mirror, Mirror'by Gregory
McGuire;'The Long Way Down' by Nick Hornby;'On Chesil Beach'by Ian McEwan;'Winter in Madrid'

Players'by Joanne Harris.
New members always welcome, just come along. Dot Barnard.
Leire & Dunton Scouts
At the end of last term, we held a Christmas Camp. The Scouts had
sleigh races, bauble orienteering and (with a little culinary help from Martin) cooked a full
Christmas dinner over a wood fire. Each tent also had its own Christmas tree, fully decorated.
Last weekend (8th-10th January) half of the troop went to the Gilwell Winter Camp, in Epping
Forest. The numbers were slightly down compared with previous years, but around 2,000 Scouts
from all around the country camped under canvas in temperatures of around –6 degrees C. Our
Scouts (some of whom were on their first camp with us) had to cope with pitching tents in three or
four inches of snow and tying boot laces that were frozen solid. But they all coped very well indeed,
and had a fantastic time, enjoying activities such as zorbing, climbing, high ropes, the leap of faith,
crate stacking, quad bikes, outdoor laser quest, robot wars and lots of others.
On the 30th of January, the Scouts will be
holding their fourth annual pantomime –
2
Cinderella. This year it will be held at Broughton Astley village hall, due to Dunton Bassett
village hall being sold out last year. Another change this year is that the Beavers and Cubs
will be taking part.
As ever, the script is loosely based on the traditional tale, but L&D have made it their own (the Doc
Marten boots in the picture are a subtle hint). It promises to be a fantastic show, so get your
tickets now before we sell out again!
Tickets are available from Ceri Sinfield (0116 2338646, ceri.sinfield@gmail.com), Alan Hill (01455
209868), Mo Black (01455 209857) or Eric Pridding (01455 209208), and are £3 for adults, £1 for
children.
If your son / daughter would be interested in joining our ever-growing troop, give Ceri Sinfield a
call on 0116 2338646 for more information.
So far this term Cubs have enjoyed an evening of Lego and KNex, made paper
boats and learnt about the solar system and made rockets. Forthcoming events include a visit from
the local vets, ten pin bowling and two camps are already booked.
Eric Pridding - Akela
Notice from Alan Hill, Chairman of Dunton Parish Council
DB residents,
Can you please keep an eye out for youths hanging around the village hall and inform the Beat
Officers of anything untoward.
On Friday night, at the beginning of January, 4 youths smashed the changing room window while
Helen Guys dance girls were in the room. Thankfully no one was injured, but only through luck.
The police responded but by then the culprits had gone. Helen's teachers told me that they had
been receiving ongoing intimidation from some youths shouting abuse, throwing eggs, etc, but this
was clearly the worst incident. There were also 2 broken pint glasses by the back door, so please
be vigilant.
PC Patel has spoken to me and will be in touch with Helen Guy to offer support; I have also
volunteered to be on call should Helen feel that her dance classes are being intimidated. Helen's
classes are a great bonus to the village and it would be a shame if a few mindless acts should put
them at risk.
Dunton Bassett County Primary School
The school celebrated Christmas in the usual style with lots of events for parents, families and friends. We were
pleased to see so many "strangers" at the PTA Christmas Fair which finally raised over £800 in total. Thank you
to everyone who attended. The Christmas Tree festival sponsored by Oakberry Trees was again a success and
culminated in everyone braving the cold and rain to sing carols outside on the playground-a good excuse for
consuming the mulled wine that followed!
This term will be equally busy with events-the first of which unfortunately is in response to the earthquake in
Haiti. In conjunction with our colleagues across the Lutterworth group of schools (LASA) children are being
invited to wear a Hat for Haiti in return for a donation.
The fire service have visited giving good advice about fire safety to all children. Yr 5/6 continue to benefit from
links with LHS by visiting the High School for lessons in cooking and physics, and by a Modern Foreign Languages
teacher visiting us to set the challenge of producing a pamphlet on French breakfast.
Teams have been entered in sports competitions in line with their work in lessons-watch this space for the
results!
Children in class 3 are studying the local area so be prepared to see them around the village as they go about
their study. Do you have any interesting tales to tell about the history and geography of the village? Class 3
would love to hear from you. Maybe you have old photos or articles that would be useful? Please contact the
school office.
The term ends with our Easter celebrations but there's much work to be done before then!

Dunton Heritage Society
Members of Dunton Bassett Heritage Group enjoyed a talk by Anne French as part of their meeting
on January 19. Anne spoke of the History of Flight in Leicestershire, and in particul ar the role of the
Leicestershire Aero Club based at Stoughton. In May, members are arranging an outing to visit the
Aero Club. At their meeting on February 16 Bob Trubshaw will talk on Little known Leicestershire
and Rutland.
Dine in Dunton
The latest Dine in Dunton held on 5th December raised £750 for Driving for the Disabled, based in
Willowby Waterley. A good evening was had by all and our thanks go to all who continue to
support this evening. For 2010 we are planning similar events in April and October so watch this
space for further information.
Liz Clarke ex Post Lady in Dunton Bassett
It is with great sadness the untimely death of Liz Clarke is announced. She was our post lady for
quite some time before moving to Devon with her husband Brian. Our thoughts are with Brian and
their daughters.
Warning
I have been contacted by a village member asking me to relate an incident that happened to her.
She had a lamp with a three pronged low energy bulb in it pointing upwards; the shade on the
lamp caught fire because some dead flies were touching the bulb. Had she not been nearby a much
more serious fire could have happened! So please be aware!
