To: Regional, National Press From: Kristine Rippel, Taos Center for the Arts Re: Larry Bell: The Last Women Date: 2/1/09 For Immediate Release: # # # Larry Bell: The Last Women Opens the New Encore Gallery at Taos Center for the Arts, Taos, NM Taos Center for the Arts is proud to present Larry Bell: The Last Women opening Friday, March 6, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the new Encore Gallery in the Taos Community Auditorium. Bell is a minimalist, geometric abstractionist, sculptor, and world famous artist who will reveal his latest work in Taos – only at the TCA. Larry’s artistic career has spanned nearly 50 years, exhibiting nationally and internationally, with works in countless public and private collections. He has captured an audience in every major art center of the world through his tremendous skill and commitment. Bell’s work has been classified in many ways: Glass Boxes, Standing Wall Glass Panel Installations, Vapor Drawings, Mirage Works, Furniture De Lux, Sumer, Fractions and now The Last Women. He is often associated with Light and Space, a term used to describe a group of mostly West Coast artists whose work is concerned with perceptual experience stemming from the viewer’s interaction with their work. Larry’s mirage pieces are collages constructed by arranging pieces of coated materials then laminating them. As Bell says, “I color sheets of various paper materials, strips of metal coated Mylar, along with metal coated laminate films. Then I fuse them to canvases and stretch them. Tapestries of woven light differentials result.” The Last Women is a group of 18 individual Mirage Works of delicately distant women figures. Each piece is built in the same fashion as his abstract mirages but feature curvatures and highlights that suggest the female form. The Women are hidden among values; look closer, the form pulls itself out. They are sensual and seductive; subtly concealed within his abstraction. Taos Center for the Arts is honored to host such a respected and renowned visual artist in this, the inaugural exhibit for TCA’s new gallery. Please join us on Friday, March 6, 2009 beginning at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate the reopening of the Taos Community Auditorium and the opening of the new Encore Gallery. Larry Bell: The Last Women runs through Sunday, April 19, 2009, and the Encore gallery will be open Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on weekends during Taos Community Auditorium events.
