CEO of Community Foundations of Canada Honoured for
Outstanding Contribution to Public Policy
s
Second Voluntary Sector Recipient in Award’ 15-Year History
s
(OTTAWA) April 4, 2002 – The head of one of Canada’ fastest growing philanthropic
networks is among four distinguished Canadians to be honoured today for their
contributions to public policy.
Monica Patten, CEO of Community Foundations of Canada (CFC), is being recognized
by the Public Policy Forum at its 15th Annual Testimonial Awards in Toronto this evening.
Each year, some 1,000 Canadians gather to recognize leaders who have made a major
contribution to the quality of government in our country. Patten is only the second
voluntary sector leader to receive this prestigious award in its 15-year history.
“Monica is nationally and internationally renowned for her contribution to philanthropy,“
s
said Ross Ramsey, Chair of CFC’ Board of Directors. “ She has been instrumental in
s
the spectacular growth of Canada’ community foundation movement and has nurtured
countless other nations in their quest for a better society.”
s
During Patten’ tenure, the number of Canadian community foundations has more than
tripled in the past decade – from 32 foundations in 1990 to more than 118 today. Their
asset base has skyrocketed from $375 million to $1.6 billion and last year they
s
contributed more than $78 million to community organizations– that’ more than the
business deals signed on the latest Team Canada trade mission.
Patten has also championed the development of community philanthropy in many parts
of the world, including Brazil, Mexico, central and eastern Europe, and Australia. She is
currently the vice-chair of WINGS-CF, a global network of community foundation support
organizations, and an advisor to the German-based Bertelsmann Foundation on its
Transatlantic Community Foundation Network.
On the national front, Patten has taken on several leadership roles within the Voluntary
Sector Initiative, a joint project of the federal government and the voluntary sector. She
is a Board member of the Centre for Voluntary Sector Research and Development and
serves on the Board of Advisors for Ashoka and the Institute on Governance (IOG).
Patten, previously a vice president of United Way of Canada - Centraide Canada, is also
s
involved in the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy’ IMAGINE program and is an advisor
to Ketchum's Philanthropic Trends.
s
Other recipients of this year’ award are: Nellie Cournoyea (Chair & CEO of Inuvialuit
Regional Corp., former Premier of the Northwest Territories), Pierre Lortie (President &
COO of Bombardier Transportation), and Milton Wong (Chair of HSBC Asset
Management Canada Ltd. and founder of the Laurier Institution). The Honourable
Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia, and Barbara Stymiest, President & CEO,
Toronto Stock Exchange Inc., will co-chair the event.
The Public Policy Forum is a non-partisan, non-profit organization aimed at improving
the quality of government in Canada through better dialogue between the public, private
and third sectors. The Forum's members are drawn from businesses, governments, the
voluntary sector and the labour movement.
