The New Girl Scout Leadership Experience
Take a Bold Journey with us into the Future
The first series of Girl Scout Journeys will soon be available for sale on the shelves of our Girl Scout Shops. There are many questions about how this new program material will fit into our familiar Girl Scout program of earning awards, doing service, selling cookies, going to camp, and any other activities the girls have chosen to do in the past. As we begin to explore the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, it becomes obvious this sequence of experiences connects and defines what we as Girl Scouts have been doing for many years. Agent of Change – The Girl Scout Junior journey will introduce Dez, the Spider, who will engage girls in the web of Power. The Power of One (discover), Power of Team (connect), Power of Community (take action), and will help girls ultimately discover their powerful selves.

So What is a Journey?
A journey: Has a beginning and an end, and the girls learn and grow as they travel between the two. Incorporates discover, connect and take action outcomes. Incorporates the processes of Girl Led, Cooperative Learning and Learning by Doing. Gives girls a chance to reflect on what they learn. Is fun and challenging. Asks Girl Scout adults to be purposeful in their leadership. Encourages Girl Scout adults not to be “activity junkies,” but to focus on the quality of experiences rather than the quantity. The first series of leadership journeys is entitled, It’s Your World – Change It! Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden – This journey introduces Tula, the tulip; Gloria, the morning glory; Gerri, the geranium; and other Flower Friends to teach Daisy Girl Scouts about the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Brownie Quest – This journey will take girls on two trails of adventure. “The Trail of the Elf” and “The Trail of the Three Keys” will introduce new friends, take a visit to the clubhouse, and allow girls to take other exciting adventures. Curiosity will be an important element as the girls find the keys to unlock the doors.
FOCUS OF GIRL SCOUT ACTIVITIES
=
LEADERSHIP
aMaze – The Girl Scout Cadette journey will provide opportunities to navigate personal relationships in the best and most productive ways and ultimately help to create a more peaceful world. GIRLtopia – The Girl Scout Senior journey engages girls to envision an ideal world for girls. Through team discussion and reflective experiences, girls act as visionaries who can foresee an ideal world where girls are respectful, valued, and honored for their intelligence and dreams. Your Voice, Your World – The Power of Advocacy – The Girl Scout Ambassador journey will unite high school juniors and seniors as they raise their voices with the power of advocacy to take on local, national, and global challenges. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Girl Scout movement. Let’s work in partnership to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Program Calendar & Descriptions
This section will provide all the information you need to plan an exciting year of activities for your girls. Each month’s calendar shows events at a glance for both girls and adults, followed by detailed descriptions of each girl program. Adult learning opportunities are listed in shaded bold italics on the calendar and are described more fully in the next section. All of these activities are tied to measurable outcomes that, over time, will set girls on a life-long path to make the world a better place. These outcomes are noted in the description by a “D” for discover or “C” for connect. If no specific contact information is provided in the description, please contact the Program/Product Sales Manager in your area (listed on page 4) for more details about the event. Registration information for programs may be found on page 2. When registration is complete, each person who has registered will be notified of the location of the program. The exact location is not always known as far in advance as we publish our calendar. Please note the following: This symbol indicates it is not a Council-planned event. Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama is not responsible for program content and/or program logistics, etc. Questions about the event should be directed to the sponsoring organization. Troop Camping
Training
All troops using Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama’s (GSNCA) facilities are required to be accompanied by an adult currently certified in First Aid and CPR and an adult who has completed the Basic Troop Camping course at Council-owned sites. Camp Tombigbee 6206 Hwy. 39, Boligee, AL 35443 House and renovated barn with acreage and private ponds for use by troops, family reunions, service units, etc. Located at Exit 40 off I-59/20 in Greene County south of Tuscaloosa. Phone: (205) 980-4750 or toll-free (205) 734-4541 Food service is available at some sites for large groups. Program activities may be arranged through Troop Camp registration or the Camp Directors.
Insurance
GSNCA provides supplemental insurance coverage for every registered Girl Scout participating in approved, supervised program/camping events lasting two nights or less. All girls and adults visiting GSNCA’s camps must be registered before the outing in order to have coverage.
How to Make Reservations for Troop Camping at GSNCA Camps
Tentative Reservations: The troop leader should contact the Camp Director to make an initial inquiry as to available dates, sites, and units. Reservations are on a space-available basis. A tentative reservation can be set at this time. Written Application with Fees: Once the initial telephone request is made, the application packet will be mailed. No reservation is complete until the application with a 25% deposit is received in the Council office. The application form and deposit must be submitted to GSNCA within two (2) weeks of the verbal registration. If application and deposit are not received within this time frame, reservation will be cancelled. Any special equipment and/or programming must be requested at this time. Receipt of Permit: Once the application form and deposit are received by the Council, the leader will be mailed a Troop Camping Permit. Be sure to check the permit for accuracy of dates, site, units, etc. Final Payment of Fees: Final payment of all fees (lodging, staffed program activities, equipment rental) must be made within six (6) weeks of the camp date. Failure to submit final payment will result in the cancellation of the reservation, rescinding of the previously issued permit, and the loss of all fees paid. Troop/Group Camping Roster Form and Troop Permit: The Troop/Group Camping Roster Form and permit must be completed and placed in a designated drop box located at the camp entrance upon arrival at the camp site or given to the site manager. The roster must include the name and telephone number of every person in the group, both children and adults (see form on page 58). Damage Deposit: A separate check for $50 should be included with the payment for the balance of your fees. This check will not be deposited/cashed unless the troop damages the facilities, fails to properly clean the unit(s), or is issued a parking citation.

Cancellation Policy
If a troop cancels the reservation at least six (6) weeks prior to the date of arrival, the full deposit will be refunded. If a troop cancels less than six weeks prior to the date of arrival, all fees paid will be lost.
Emergency Telephone Numbers
The emergency telephone numbers for each site are located in the return packets you will receive after your reservations are complete. The site manager’s phone numbers should be used only as a means for a parent to get emergency messages to a troop/group.
Camp Procedures
Troop/Group Camping
Once the completed Troop/Group Camping Roster has been placed in the drop box or given to the site manager, the troop/group leader must wait in the parking lot until all girls have arrived. Luggage should be loaded into one vehicle to be transported to the unit. No one will be allowed to go to the unit without the troop/group leader and the certified first aider. Troops that use public use areas are responsible for cleaning those areas.
Campsite Rules
Please read information specific to each campsite in the return packets. It is the leader’s responsibility to inform all participants (girls and adults) of the campsite rules and regulations. Absolutely no weapons or illegal substances allowed on camp properties. No alcoholic beverages are permitted when Girl Scouts are present. Campfires are permitted only in established campfire areas. Only paraffin-based firestarters are permitted; no liquid firestarters allowed. Propane and other safe fuel stoves and lanterns are permitted; no white gas. Please leave pets at home! Speed limits are posted and strictly enforced when girls are present. Fines will be assessed against troop/group for failure to obey posted speed limits. Children are not allowed to ride in the back of any pick-up truck on camp properties. Please help keep the campsite clean; pick up trash wherever you see it. Remember, a Girl Scout always leaves a place better than she found it!
Parking/Vehicles
Emergency service vehicles must be able to access all buildings and program areas. Park only in designated area; please do not park along roadsides or block roads. Vehicles will be issued parking citations which may cause the troop/group to lose their damage deposit.
Be Courteous/Quiet at Night
Please be courteous to other troops and groups using the campsite. Plan use of public areas so as not to interfere with others and limit loud activities to daylight hours.
