Medicine for the Elderly, Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen
Full Time 40 hours per week
Salary £74504 to £100446 per annum

We invite applications for this replacement post, arising through the retirement of the present post holder. The
Service is based at Woodend Hospital which has an excellent range of investigative and rehabilitation facilities.
The postholder will join one of the largest departments of geriatric medicine, with exciting opportunities for clinical
work in secondary and community care settings at a time when innovative redesign and provision of new services
are planned or taking place. The service is closely integrated with the Academic Department and there are
excellent opportunities for research, and active involvement in under/postgraduate education is anticipated. It is
likely that the University of Aberdeen will accord honorary status of Senior Clinical Lecturer. The Department of
Rehabilitation and Medicine for the Elderly are closely linked and there are established services supporting Stroke,
Orthogeriatrics and Parkinson’s disease. There are also considerable developments in the field of community
geriatrics with further expansion planned and exciting opportunities exist to advance cooperative working with
primary care and CHP services. A review of the Day Hospital is planned and a triage area has recently been
developed to reduce acute general medical admissions. A Falls Service is also being progressed and it is
envisaged that this together with the development of Consultant affiliated GP clusters will enhance our already
proactive department. NHS Grampian is currently progressing the Intermediate Care Agenda with the intention of
accommodating all acutely ill patients on the Foresterhill Site. This will involve the transfer of acute geriatrics to the
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary site by 2012.

Candidates with any special interest in a related field will be actively encouraged to develop their area of expertise.
Any interest could be accommodated. Involvement with general (internal) medicine can also be arranged and
research/audit is encouraged.

Aberdeen is a University City with one of the oldest medical schools in Europe and is the centre of the North Sea
oil industry. It offers an excellent quality of life with diverse leisure activities, a high standard of schooling and is
within easy reach of the Highlands for hill walking and ski-ing. Candidates must either have completed specialist
training and be entered on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of completion at the date of interview.
Established Consultants seeking change and new horizons are welcome to apply. Interested candidates are

OAP Directorate, Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin
Full Time 40 hours per week
Salary £74504 to £100446 per annum

CONSULTANT IN OLD AGE PSYCHIATRY

Applications are invited for this Consultant post. Applicants will hold a CCT, will be on the GMC's Specialist
Register or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Old Age Psychiatry. Applications are welcome
also from Doctors who will obtain CCT in Old Age Psychiatry within six months of the interview date for this post.

As this post is a result of a redesign of the service, there is a newly agreed catchment area population of 8000 over
65s covering East of Moray (with a second Old Age Psychiatrist caring for those in West Moray), with beds in Dr
Gray’s Hospital, Elgin and Seafield Hospital, Buckie. One of the attractions of working in Moray is a tradition of
close working with colleagues from General Practice and the local authority. It has been advantageous to have
coterminosity and an active local Mental Health Framework group.

The Royal Burgh of Elgin thrives as a centre of administration, education, tourism and trade with agricultural,
service and textile industries. Situated in Scotland’s Castle and Whisky country, the area offers a wide range of
recreational activities such as golf, fishing, hill walking, cycling, horse riding and winter sports. This is an
opportunity to live and work in a beautiful part of Scotland that offers a great quality of life and has good transport
links with the rest of the UK.

The postholder will provide clinical leadership to a Community Mental Health Team. The postholder will be
expected to work closely with the West Moray Consultant developing joint strategies to develop local services and
the two Consultants will cross cover for leave.

The postholder will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The postholder will be
expected to register with the Continuing Professional Development Programme of the Royal College of
Psychiatrists for which all costs will be met by NHS Grampian. There are excellent opportunities for research and
close links exist between the Service and the Departments of Mental Health and Psychology of the University of
Aberdeen. The postholder will be expected to contribute to audit and other elements of clinical governance.

The post is advertised as whole time. Candidates unable to work whole time for personal reasons will be eligible to
be considered for the post and, if appointed, an appropriately amended job description will be agreed.

If this post is not on the current “Shortage Occupation” list as issued by the UK Border Agency, it may not qualify

Full Time 40 hours per week
Salary £74504 to £100446 per annum

CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGY FULL TIME: 10 PAs (or Long-term Locum)
North of Scotland Paediatric Gastroenterology Network

Applications are invited for the post of consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology. This post has arisen as a result of
the retirement of the current postholder. The post, which will be based at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital
(RACH) and hosted by NHS Grampian, provides clinical support to the North of Scotland Paediatric
Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (PGHN) managed clinical network (covering a total population of ~1.3
million). The service has been designed to ensure equity of access to specialist PGHN services through the centre
in Aberdeen (all services) Dundee (outpatient, inpatient and endoscopy) and Inverness (outpatient and inpatient).
Specialist dietetic and nursing support is available in all three centres with specialist paediatric and neonatal
surgery in Aberdeen.

Candidates should have completed, or be within 6 months of completing specialist training in Paediatric
Gastroenterology.

The post is based at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH) with commitments to the neighbouring Health
Boards in Highland and Tayside. At present weekly clinics and endoscopy (twice monthly) lists are held in Dundee
and monthly clinics in Inverness. A tertiary service is provided at RACH with access to endoscopy, full diagnostic
services and paediatric surgery. There are weekly general gastroenterology clinics with dedicated clinics for IBD
and coeliac disease. Hepatology is provided through outreach from King’s College Hospital, London. The
appointment of this third consultant will allow the development of PGHN outpatient clinics in Perth, Elgin, Orkney
and Shetland. There are well established education and research links with colleagues in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

This post will also have a commitment to the General Paediatric service in RACH. There is a consultant of the
week service, which covers acute paediatric admissions Monday to Friday (all other commitments cancelled), and
the on-call rota (no neonates) will be approximately 1 in 10. This post will also have a regular general paediatric
out-patient clinic. Child protection is largely managed by a dedicated team during normal office hours, but there is a
small requirement for out of hours assessment for the on-call consultant.

The purpose built RACH opened in January 2004. The hospital (85 inpatient and 15 day case beds) provides a
wide range of secondary and tertiary paediatric medical and surgical services. The Foresterhill site also
encompasses Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with a total bed complement of 1200.
The Medical School and Institute of Medical Sciences for Aberdeen University share the same site. Many
opportunities presently exist to network with colleagues in secondary and tertiary care across Scotland. There are
equally modern, well-equipped facilities in Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee and in Raigmore
Hospital, Inverness.

Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and the North of Scotland are known for a high quality of life, astounding natural beauty
and a multiplicity of sporting pursuits. There are excellent travel links with the rest of UK and Europe. High quality
education, both state and private, is available.

Surgeon.

The breast service has undergone a major re-design process in recent years and plans are in place for further

Full Time 40 hours per week
Salary £74504 to £100446 per annum

An exciting opportunity exists for motivated individuals to work in our expanding Department of Oncology at
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The plan for these two posts is to work with colleagues to provide site specialist
services in gynaecology oncology, upper & lower GI oncology with clinical input to the Elgin Cancer Unit, and
breast cancer, although other site specialty interests may be mutually agreed. Our consultants in medical & clinical
oncology work together in site specialised teams that include the specialist trainees. Appointees should expect to
have responsibilities for both chemotherapy & radiotherapy.

An HDR brachytherapy service is being developed as part of the expansion, particularly for provision and
development of non-surgical gynaecological oncology services in Grampian, Moray, Orkney, Shetland & Highland.
The surgical service for gynaecological oncology for the whole NOSCAN region is based at Aberdeen Royal
Infirmary and works closely with the oncology services, including joint clinics in Aberdeen, Elgin & Inverness.

Grampian region has a population of over 550,000. The stable population and complete range of diagnostic and
therapeutic facilities on one site provides an excellent environment for continuity of care & clinical research. The
successful candidates will join the existing consultants, 5 in Clinical Oncology and 3 in Medical Oncology (one a
Clinical Senior Lecturer). Other medical staff in the department include 5 Speciality Training positions (3 in Clinical
Oncology & 2 in Medical Oncology) and 2 Specialty Grade Doctors in Oncology (with one based in Elgin). The
successful candidates will be expected to participate in the teaching programmes provided for both
undergraduates and specialist trainees in the department with time set aside within the job plans. Job plans would
include up to 10 sessions.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is a 1000 bed hospital incorporating all major specialities and sub-specialities which are
very well integrated with oncology. Modern imaging facilities incorporate Scotland’s first PET-CT scanner. With the
University of Aberdeen Medical School on the same site it is Europe’s largest healthcare campus.

The department is very active in clinical research recruiting patients to national and international clinical trials.
Clinical research support is provided both through the Scottish Cancer Research Network and through the many
commercially sponsored studies in which consultants are encouraged to participate as local principal investigator.
The Institute of Medical Sciences as part of the Medical School campus provides first class on-site research
laboratory facilities. Translational Cancer Research is a major focus of the Academic Department of Medical
Oncology and an identified strategic aim of the University of Aberdeen. Opportunities exist for active participation in
and design of innovative clinical translational studies in cancer medicine. The successful candidate may be
awarded Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer Status with the University of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen city and shire are well known for their superb quality of life and enjoy
first class amenities and excellent communication services with other British cities and the continent, for example
flying time to London is one hour with more than 20 daily flights - and road and rail links to all points north and
south are excellent, with few of the congestion problems of central Scotland. Aberdeenshire includes some of the
most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm Mountain National Park and a wide
range of outdoor pursuits within easy reach or commute of the city.
