Occasionally you may need to write a letter resigning from a position. Regardless
of your reason for resigning, your letter should be friendly in tone and tactful. Someday
you may want to use this employer as a reference, and you want the employer to
remember you favorably. The following example uses the bad-news plan. Remember
to format your personal business letter in correct block or modified block style.
Dear Mr. O'Conner:
I have enjoyed my last three years at the Smith Tool and Die Company. I have learned a
great deal and have made many permanent friends.
Because I would like to make greater use of my sales background, I have accepted a
position at the brokerage firm of Smythe and Dale. Please accept my letter of resignation
effective August 15.
Thank you for all that you have done to make my work both interesting and enjoyable.
