The Financial Planner
Financial planning, as a career, is growing. In fact, the number of financial planners in the United States is difficult to determine, but there were more than 31,000 licensed Certified Financial Planners in the United States as of December, 1997.
There are some basic concepts that consumers can use to classify financial planners and to determine a planner's background, qualifications, and education. Most financial planners fall into three types, which we will examine here. It is also worth noting that consumers always have the option of doing the majority of their personal financial planning on their own, without the aid of any financial planner or investment advisor (much the same as preparing one's own tax returns).
