A Collectible Certificate from the MICHIGAN CENTRAL RAILROAD This is a $1000.00 Gold Bearer Bond !!! When issued in 1902 these Certificates were virtually the same as Cash because they were payable to whoever happened to possess them - hence the term "Bearer" Bond - in GOLD! This Railroad Line started in 1837 and was soon serving much of the Central Midwest. That section of the country had just recently been opened up to Rail Traffic by the Erie and the Lake Shore Railroads. By 1867 it had been incorporated - along with many other smaller lines - into the New York Central System of Cornelius Vanderbilt - also a Commodore but a less distinguished one than Dewey. For more on Vanderbilt and these two competing Railroad Systems (Erie and NY Central) take a look at the other Certificates available in My eBay Store. The Vignette on this Gold Bearer Bond is a marvelous engraving which shows a 19th Century Locomotive entering the Station. Much of the rest of the Certificate is also covered with elaborate engraving work. And that's not all !!! What's more - and this is very important - most of these 1902 Gold Bonds have Cancellation Holes which mar the Train Vignette - Check the others out closely! As you can see from the scans this one is totally free of such a defect!!!
