							               About the Blood Challenge
WHO Jeremy S. Stephens, State Personnel Director, State of Michigan employees and
              Michigan’s major blood collection agencies:
                     American Red Cross
                     Michigan Blood
                     Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center

WHAT A campaign to increase State of Michigan employee blood donations by 20 percent
              over three months.
WHEN July 1, 2010 - September 30, 2010

WHY 97 percent of the population will need blood or blood products by the time they reach 75
years of age. Only 5 percent actually donate blood. Donations typically decrease
during the summer months while the need for blood products increases.
Every two seconds someone needs blood.
Donating blood is a form of giving unrelated to money - a gift literally from the
                      heart.
One blood donation can save up to three lives.

HOW For those who have never donated blood before, this is the chance to get started.
Current blood donors are challenged to give every 56 days, and bring in family
              and friends to donate.
State of Michigan employees, family and friends can donate at worksite* and
community blood drives and at blood collection centers.
State of Michigan employees who donate at State of Michigan worksite blood
drives will receive a Blood Challenge canvas bag (while supplies last).
All donations will be tracked by a Blood Challenge ID card. Bring a completed
copy to the blood drive. You may download the card at
                     www.michigan.gov/bloodchallenge.
If you are ineligible or deferred from donating blood, you may recruit family
members, friends, or a State of Michigan employee who is a 1st time donor to
donate for you. Donations will be tracked by a Donor Buddy ID card. Bring a
completed copy to the blood drive. If the Donor Buddy is a first time donor who
is a State of Michigan employee, he/she will be entered into the prize drawings.
They must bring in a completed Blood Challenge ID card and a Donor Buddy
card. You may download the cards at www.michigan.gov/bloodchallenge.
All state employees who present to donate during the 3 month challenge will be
entered into monthly $100 Gift Certificate drawings. The grand prize will be a
Mackinac Island Getaway Package. All prizes are being provided courtesy of
                     the blood collection agencies.
The State Personnel Director is challenging all departments or agencies to see
who will be the WINNERS of the Blood Challenge Department Competitions.
The Blood Challenge ID cards will track State of Michigan employee donations
                     by department.
Employees who would like to inspire others by sharing a testimony or story as
a blood donor or recipient may contact Carol Twiss at twissc@michigan.gov.
*Please inquire if your management will allow non-state employees in the worksite.
