The tendency to overuse certain skills or remain within one's comfort zone can limit an industrial engineer's (IE) ability to expand into other industries such as healthcare. You may need to add education, certifications and/or experience. You will be most successful by matching your skills with the key issues driving healthcare decisions. To further enhance marketability, IEs should seek to gain experience and credibility by completing projects applicable to healthcare. Complete a healthcare-specific lean Six Sigma certification course or do research in conjunction with healthcare-centric industrial engineering or operations undergraduate and graduate programs. The supply chain is another key healthcare sector relevant to IEs. IEs with supply chain sector experience can translate their knowledge into viable healthcare projects.
