Voluntary continuing education program for library trustees. Five core skill areas address the library director, board operations, budgets and advocacy, policies and determining future needs. Many ways to earn points – at board meetings, online, at workshops, at state and national conferences. Certificates, awarded by the State Library of Kansas for completing training in all five KanTEP core skill areas, are good for three years. Follow-up certification is available. One contact hour is defined as 15-60 minutes of education. The honor system is used for reporting self-study and board meeting CE; trainers document attendance at workshops. Diverse recognition by the State Library of Kansas, KLTA and regional systems at conferences and on websites.

WHY
have trustee education?
WHAT’s KanTEP?
[KanTEP is] “A voluntary continuing education program whose goal is to enhance library service for all Kansans through knowledgeable public library trustees.” Its five core skills state: 1 “Trustees shall be able to employ and supervise a qualified library director and periodically evaluated the director’s competence. 2 Trustees shall have the skills to enable the library board to function effectively through good board organization, good documentation and new trustee orientation. 3. Trustees shall be knowledgeable about the library’s annual budget and skilled in marketing and advocating for the library’s needs with local government, community leadership and state government. 4 Trustees shall be capable of assessing and adopting policies that will result in the effective operation of the library, in accordance with state and local laws and with full respect for the Library Bill of Rights. 5 Trustees shall facilitate an ongoing process of strategic planning for the library and will determine their community’s future needs for library facilities, collections and information access.” Source: State Library of Kansas, Kansas Trustee Education Program
WHEN
will KanTEP start?
Library trustees face complex issues You deal with budgets, funding, city and county officials, strategic planning, policies and much more. Kansas Trustees Education Program (KanTEP) helps grow your confidence and helps your library provide exceptional service. Its five core areas address the library director, board operations, budgets and advocacy, policies and planning for future needs. Library trustees are busy people KanTEP lets you choose the most convenient way to cover a topic – workshops, online self-study, director presentations at your board meetings and regional or statewide conferences.
KanTEP is a project of the State Library of Kansas Co-sponsored by the Kansas Library Trustee Association.
KanTEP will start on July 1, 2007. Currently, a pilot project with ten libraries is testing the training done in board meetings. The 10 libraries are: Garnett Abilene Kingman Basehor Quinter Belleville Syracuse Bonner Springs Topeka-Shawnee Emporia County Participating directors and trustees will evaluate what worked, what didn’t. Findings will be used in designing training for board meetings.
CertifiCates and reCognition Certificates, awarded by the State Library for completing training in all five KanTEP core skill areas, are good for three years. Renewal certification is available. Credits are based on one contact hour, defined as 15-60 minutes of education. Certification winners will be recognized by the State Library of Kansas, KLTA and the regional systems.
