Intergalactic Brochures Activate 1. Students have viewed three Space videos focusing on the planets. They completed graphic organizers and took notes based on the videos. Acquire 1. Students participated in a “Jigsaw” in which they collaborated with group members, acting as both active listeners and specialists on assigned planets. They had to complete a chart prompting specific information. Research was done by the teacher and given to the students as a document. 2. Two short open book pop quizzes were applied in which students had to use the information gleaned from group discussion/completed chart. 3. Internet Research sites were provided by the classroom teacher. Students were given class time and an open lunch period to surf the provided sites for information. 4. Students were provided with several sample brochures from previous students and in small groups, they analyzed them and answered questions based on a grading sheet used to focus the goal during group discussion. The students then had to come up with a grade for the brochures, based on their own criteria. 5. Class discussion of criteria for a brochure based on insights gained through group analysis of samples 6. Students provided with rubric, checklist, and expectations for the project…went over them together as whole group. 7. Planet names for brochures were drawn from a hat in order to provide variety in the overall presentation. 8. Bibliographical references, reviewed (students given samples of all format types) 9. Brief overview of credibility in websites used….not allowed to use Wikipedia as changes can easily be made to the information. Apply 1. Students created rough copies of their brochures 2. Brochures were proofread and edited by teacher 3. Student implemented edit changes on their final rough draft 4. Students produced a good copy on the computer using MS Publisher. a. Mini lessons were given on file setup and specific tools throughout the production process
