Overview of AP French 4 & 5 calendars
Some of this is in my other folders. I just wanted you to be able to make sense of this without having to refer to anything else. Please excuse the repetition.
These calendars are from 2004-2005. As some of you may know, I missed all of 2005-2006 due to illness and had to retire in April 2006. If I were still teaching, I‟d use them. There is more information about the courses under les règles (a separate document that also covers levels 1 and 2). French 4‟s are based on Bravo! 3 rd edition. The students purchased the accompanying workbook/lab manual. French 5‟s are based on the textbook Connaissances et réactions and the workbook Cours Supérieur, which they purchased. I based some vocabulary exercises on those in the workbook that goes with Connaissances et réactions. I thought the grammar in it was a little sparse and the reading awfully hard (but better than in the text because it has multiple choice questions), so preferred CS. I know there are many fans of Une fois pour toutes but I thought Amsco‟s Cours Supérieur was a better value because it also has vocabulary and literature selections besides having a lower price. And, I liked that the grammar explanations are in English. As a student, I hated it when I couldn‟t understand the explanations! You‟ll see I showed one movie per 6-weeks grading period. We just watched it “for fun” (I know some of you disagree with that) but I had extra credit questions on the chapter exams based on it. I don‟t know about your students, but mine would do anything for extra credit. That way, I knew they paid attention to the films! For the “rédactions” in 4, they usually used the topic from the textbook, occasionally one from the workbook if I needed another one for the grading period/chapter. I had the 2 nd edition teacher‟s manual because we also used that edition – and it had topics that I used once or twice. I always tried to keep the topics with the chapter under study and to give them at the beginning of the grading period so they had the opportunity to correct them for a higher grade. I used a correction code to point out errors I‟ve always had to walk that line between academic rigor and good grades. Make it too hard and no one will take your class; make it too easy and they don‟t learn what they need from level to level and what colleges expect. For 5, they could choose any topic in the chapter as long as it dealt with the vocabulary in question. I required them to use, and underline, at least 10 new words or expressions for each “rédac” (as the kids called them) – 5 for level 4. In the word count, I didn‟t let them count any article or prepositions. For some, I had to highlight those words the first few times then, they figured it out. [Another attachment is “évaluations des rédactions” – it has a correction key of errors and a tally sheet so the students can keep track of their errors. I used that for everything except the last semester of level 5. Then I highlighted the errors and used the AP rubric – which I gave them. If they chose to rewrite for a higher grade, then I used the key. At this point rewrites became optional This document is posted on APexchanges.] The MEC (mots en contexte) is a vocabulary notebook where they put “class words” – words that seem new to most of them or that I figured were new to them. I kept track of the class words but they had to add their own. Each grading period they had to write 20 sentences in level 4 (25 in level 5) using the class words first. The sentences had to explain the meaning of the word without using a definition, synonym/antonym or proper noun. It‟s hard for them at first, but the sentences get better and the kids find it easier. I used MECs in lieu of vocab quizzes – it‟s too difficult to make good ones and, they forget the words right after the quiz. I was pretty generous in grading. I took off for grammar and spelling, but the sentence itself was most important. In addition, each 6-weeks grading period, they had to expand their list of words – but never the sentences, by interspersing their words with the class words. This was to prevent them from adding a list just before handing it in – no credit for their words if all the “extras” words were at the end or if the words were some they were already supposed to know! In level 4 they started with 20 words/20 sentences, then 25 words/20 sentences, then 30 words/but still 20 sentences. Level 5 began 25/25, then 30/35 etc. No extra credit for extra sentences – because if you think it takes a long time for them to do the sentences – imagine how long it takes to grade them! In level 5, they didn‟t have a MEC the last 6 weeks since they had an AP essay and cassette due each week. It gave them, and me, a break! The biggest drawback was the time it took to correct them. I didn‟t use my correction key; I just corrected it since they didn‟t have an opportunity to rewrite it for a higher grade. [posted on APexchanges] The “presentations” at the end of 5 were on a person in the arts – authors, poets, playwrights, cinematographers, painters, sculptors, musicians, etc. The textbook had a section on this but it was not well presented at all. They had to research a 250-word paper, present it (not read it) and provide 3 visuals or examples of the person‟s work. Those, I hung around the room as our “Petit Louvre”. Class members and I took notes and I asked them about the notes when everyone was done. I collected the notes each day to prevent “sharing” of information. This was their last thing to do before AP practice began – “L‟Enfer”. I thought it was a good “final project”.
About “L’Enfer”
The “flames” in French 5 represent “L‟Enfer” – we did AP practice from the Girard book every day - all period. Some rejoinders, a passage or two, one set of each of the fill-ins and some reading passages. I started slow – one rejoinder at a time and then the answer, then 2 in a row then 3, then 5 , then 10. If there were any problems, I‟d translate the questions and answers and occasionally, the rejoinders (by this point I figured translations wouldn‟t hurt). I‟d tell them when there was I word I didn‟t know the first time – it always made them feel better! I only did 20 rejoinders in a row once, right before the exam – there just wasn‟t time in class. I‟d do one or two passages and only translate the questions and answers if there were problems. Again, I only did the “full shot” (4 passages) once, right before the exam. We always went over the fill-ins (and I‟d translate for them) so I could get in quickie grammar review lessons. For the readings, I‟d start with one, then 2, then 3, and then one day for a full set. I gave them 1 minute per question to read the passage/s (so 7 questions = 7 minutes to read and answer the questions). Usually we‟d just check the answers and I‟d translate only the questions if asked- but anything else on request. After each section, I‟d ask for a show of hands so I‟d know how they were doing. I‟d start low (how many got 2, 3 right) and keep going until everyone had raised a hand – they‟d keep track of who got the most right – something that surprised me! Once or twice, without telling them in advance although I did tell them I would do this when we started “L‟Enfer” - I‟d collect their answers and use them as a grade. By now, I wasn‟t really worried if they‟d do it or not, but I wanted them to think I was! Doing this kind of practice really increased the listening and reading grades. I know that some of you object to translating* but I figured that, by the end of French 5 I‟d gotten as much French into them as I was going to. The best students seemed to want to know what every word meant so it helped them some. Plus, since AP is the only option at this level and I had kids who were in no other AP classes, they just liked French, this helped them out too. I also felt, based on my own language learning experiences, that when I wanted to know what something meant, I didn‟t want any “teacher-circumlocution”! They seemed to appreciate it and kept it to a minimum. It helped quite a bit with those blasted fill-ins! For homework, they had one essay and one recording due each week. I started with the most recent AP exam as the last thing and worked backwards. I used the AP rubric to grade them, highlighting errors. Recordings were graded on on-time completion and I gave written feedback. Essays did not have to be rewritten but they still had the option to do so. This was a real grind for me too! The day of the AP test, we had lunch together (sandwiches on baguettes - ) in my room and I put on a Disney video in French. They told me that the video really helped them get in a French mind-set even though our conversations were in English – by then, they were way too stressed out to talk to me in French. When the test was in the morning, we had hot chocolate and croissants in my room and I even brought up my espresso maker for some French coffee! During the break, I would go to the testing site and they had a snack of orange juice and cookies. You‟d think Round Rock High School does a lot of eating but we weren‟t allowed to have “parties” or food in classrooms - I had to get special permission to do this We ended “L‟Enfer” with a French dinner at my house (I love to cook!) and for the „grand finale‟, before dessert, we burned the papers from AP practice! I live out in the boonies and it gets really dark. They absolutely loved it! The only thing I wouldn‟t let them burn was their “Cours Supérieur”…They were allowed to bring ONE representative paper from another class to throw in. I had to limit it or I‟d have been there for days! They got into making comments about the papers as they threw them into the flame – one year they even made little paper effigies…v-e-r-y interesting… All in all, I figured if half of them took the AP exam and half of those passed, we would be doing pretty well. I never discouraged any of them from taking the exam even if I thought they‟d get a 1. So, we‟d get about the average passing rate in Texas or a little lower - <40% for student in public schools (that include at least one foreign language magnet school and one honors high school to my knowledge). Now, what I think they should have scored, and the level of difficulty of the exam…that‟s a whole other can of worms! They always knocked the top out of their college CLEP exams whether they took the AP exam or not. One year, all 6 of the kids who took the AP got 1‟s! Then, one of them got 22 credits of A at college and placed in senior French – Go figure! I wrote the College Board about it and got no response. Once the AP exam was over we had the Round Rock Film Festival. We only had two weeks of classes left and for most of them, most of the class was out taking another AP exam. Plus, I didn‟t think I could force any more French out of them after that exam!
*Just a general note – in class, we tried to speak French as much of the time as we could but it wasn‟t always possible. When they started to look “glazed over”, I‟d switch to English, then back to French when they seemed more comfortable. The best thing I found for getting them to listen in French was to tell a joke or one of my “stories” from our student trips to Paris. We‟d all feel really good when students would notice that I‟d switched back to French and that they‟d understood it!
