4-H/FFA DAIRY HEIFER REPLACEMENT PROJECT
PURPOSE: A project which will enable 4-H and FFA members to raise and sell a quality heifer and, in doing so, learn some of the basic fundamentals of dairy heifer husbandry and management.
THE PLAN:
A special project in which the youth participate in an agreement with and according to a written set of policies and procedures outlined by this document.
THE COMMITTEE: A voting committee composed of one 4-H dairy leader from each 4-H club in Glenn County and one from any 4-H club in another county which has 4-H members participating in the project. Also, up to four (4) 4-H dairy leaders at-large or dairy persons to be selected by the Glenn County 4-H Program Representative or Advisor. Other voting members will consist of the 4-H Program Representative or Advisor from participating counties and one FFA Advisor from each participating FFA Chapter. Any interested persons are invited to attend the meetings. The Committee will be responsible for formulating and enforcing all policy in relation to the project. A quorum shall be those in attendance at a meeting called, when all committee members with current addresses at the 4-H Office, have been notified. 4-H - FFA DAIRY HEIFER REPLACEMENT PROJECT AGREEMENT (4-H Office, P.O. This contract agreement is due in the Glenn County 4-H Office as close to March 1st as possible, following the purchase of your project heifer. The Breeding Certificate, Up-to-date Dam and Sire Records, DHIA papers, Bill of Sale or copy, and photo I.D. or drawing of markings for each heifer are due in the Glenn County 4-H Office by *November 17, 2008. All paperwork must be completed to participate in the program.
1) Any duly enrolled 4-H or FFA member, under the supervision of a 4-H Leader or FFA Advisor, in any of the following counties are eligible to participate in the project if they follow the agreement. (Glenn, Tehama, Butte, Lake, Shasta, Mendocino and Colusa Counties.) 2) The member shall purchase their heifer with the approval of the 4-H dairy leader or FFA Advisor. The animal must be positively identified by a 4-H leader or FFA Advisor by the eartag or tatoo number. A limit of one heifer for sale each year. 3) The dam can be a grade or registered cow with a minimum 500# Butterfat (305 day) official DHIA or DHIR record. Calf must be sired by a registered bull. * Please note changes made for 2008-09
4) A yearling heifer for the next year’s sale must have been open and purchased before August 1st of the calendar year prior to the year of the sale. Bill of Sale is required. 5) The member must have adequate housing, feed and pasture before entering into this project. The project agreement may be terminated by the committee if improper feed or management is indicated. 6) The heifer must be bred by a registered purebred bull of the same breed, either by natural service or artificial insemination. Must be ready to freshen within 75 days following the sale of the heifer. The sale will be at the Glenn County Fair or the Black and White Show. If the heifer calves two weeks before the sale, the calf will be sold at the heifer’s side. 7) Accurate 4-H or FFA records must be kept up-to-date and subject to committee inspection. 8) The year your animal sells, you will be required to attend 80% of the planning/educational meetings. * There will be approximately 5 meetings. You will also agree to take part in the planning and participate in the preparation for the sale. (No Participation - No Sale) 9) The youth will see that the heifer is dehorned, vaccinated for bangs and tattooed. Lepto vaccination is suggested. Extra teats must be removed from the heifer. Veterinarian’s advice should be followed in securing good health for the heifer. 10) The youth must train the heifer to lead and fit her properly for the show and sale. All heifers must be exhibited and sold by the owner at the Glenn County Fair or the Black and White Show and Sale in Glenn County the year she is to be sold. They can be shown at any other fairs for which they are eligible. 11) The heifer must be sold at the Glenn County Fair or the Black and White Show and Sale in Glenn County. A commission will be charged to cover sales expenses, etc. 12) Prior to the sale, sifting will be done by a veterinarian who will inspect all heifers for breed type, diseases, pregnancy, udder soundness and bangs tattoo. (At this time, your heifer could be eliminated from the sale.) 13) If the committee feels at any time that the member is not meeting the agreement requirements, the committee (by a majority vote) shall have the authority to cancel any member’s agreement to participate in the project or sale. The committee has the authority to change or waive any of the agreement rules. 14) If the member drops from the project, the original owner has first chance at re-buying the heifer. 15) You must bring a bill of sale and brand inspection slip with you when you bring the heifer to the sale. Registration papers need to be checked and then transferred after sale. This is the responsibility of the seller, not the buyer. 16) If all paperwork is not completed and turned in by November 17th, 2008, you will not be able to sell.
