Background:
A variety of Bhasms (metal-based formulations) have been used in Ayurvedic system of In-
dian medicine since Vedic period. It mentions the use of gold, silver, copper, mercury and
bronze in the treatment of diseases. In Ayurved, nanoparticles from different sources such as
plants, animals, minerals and metals are used to prepare the therapeutic formulations. While
the process of preparing metal-based Ayurvedic formulations are well specified, little is
known about the form in which metal exists in the final products or its mechanism of action.
Such knowledge is needed not only for the advancement of drug research but also for en-
hancing the effectiveness of bhasms and for improving their preparation. Modern nanotech-
nology is seeking to uncover the principles and uses of nanoparticles in all the fields of mate-
rial and life sciences including Biology and Medicine. In the present context with the use of
nanotechnology, desired finished product and the ideal particle size could be identified. Possi-
bilities could also be explored to deliver these finished products of bhasms (nanoparticles) us-
ing nanosystem in order to extend bioactivity and high performance characteristics of the
drugs.
Objective:
The main goal of this symposium is to develop collaborative platforms between the US and
Indian basics, clinical and translational scientists involved in ayurved and nanomedicine re-
search with a view to synthesize a knowledge-based resources for this re-emerging technol-
ogy in the World.
