Perkins Training Center New York State School for the Blind Institute on Autism Spectrum Disorders and Visual Impairment July 7-9, 2010 This Institute is designed for Teachers of the Visually Impaired, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Special Educators, and other educational personnel working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Visual Impairment. Facilitated by Marilyn H., M.A., and D. Jay Gense, Ed. S., authors of Autism Spectrum Disorders and Visual Impairment: Meeting Students’ Learning Needs, this three day institute will address assessment, program components and instructional strategies for effective and supportive educational programs for ASDVI students. Objectives At the completion of this Institute participants will demonstrate: Increase understanding of the unique learning characteristics of students with ASDVI (Autism Spectrum Disorders AND Visual Impairment); Be knowledgeable of several key strategies to identify individual student needs for a variety of student levels; Understand how to match student learning needs to appropriate interventions; Be knowledgeable of strategies to address the expanded core curriculum areas of for learners with ASDVI; Identity one thing to put into practice immediately; and Identify implementation plan for the future.
