There were three major causes that led to Lobdell's disillusionment with Christianity: the aforementioned clergy sexual abuse; the extravagance and unethical behavior of certain prominent televangelists; and the ostracism he saw ex-Mormons suffer from Mormon communities when they left their church. In Losing My Religion, he does explore the central question of theodicy- //era/ can a good and powerful God let his children suffer?- yet does not mention other theodicy worldviews (e.g., Greg Boyd's warfare theodicy).
