About This Document: The Walters exhibition featured double-page spreads from The St. John's Bible along with manuscripts drawn from the museum's holdings (which constitute one of the most important collections in North America, with one thousand handwritten and three thousand printed books). Isaiah's suffering servant passage merits a full page: the verses, rendered in dark, heavy lettering, enclose the image of an emaciated African child, who in turn stands within the "Door of No Return" (the infamous slave deportation site in Elmina, Ghana.) At the bottom of the two pages devoted to Ezekiel's Valley of Dry Bones we see a junkyard of broken eyeglasses and heaped skulls - a reference to twentieth-century genocide - alongside disintegrating automobiles - a signal of environmental degradation.
