Commencement of new course
If you need to change your module or tuition provider before 1 May you will still be eligible for a course of study starting in May. However, if you change your subject or tuition provider after 1 May, or withdraw from a course of study at any time, your next course of study will need to be registered by the published closing dates. Full fees would need to be submitted with your registration. The closing date for courses of study commencing on 1 November is 31 August and registration forms will be sent automatically to anyone who is currently studying a UMIST validated qualification with the ifs.
Extenuating circumstances
The Institute recognises that after the deadline dates, students may experience exceptional circumstances that are beyond their control which may render them unable to sit the examination or to perform to the best of their abilities. In such cases, students may write to the Assessment Review Group (ARG) of the ifs, detailing their claim. All such cases of potential extenuating circumstances will be considered by the ARG prior to the issue of results. The ARG has the authority to discount the attempt (whether or not the examination is actually sat) if it considers the case to be appropriate. However, in such cases, the fees are not refundable. Acceptable cases would normally include death or serious illness to close relatives, personal illness or issues that can be substantiated by a medical certificate or HR support. They would not include holiday, house move, job changes or simple lack of preparation. Students should be aware that sitting an examination against medical advice will not be considered by the ARG. Students who enter for an examination but do not sit, and have not withdrawn, will be considered to have used up an attempt unless the ARG has accepted their claim for extenuating circumstances (this does not apply to students studying the DFSM). Claims for extenuating circumstances must be conveyed in writing to Student Advice and Guidance together with independent supporting evidence. Claims must be made within 4 weeks of the examination taking place.
