CIPARS On-Farm Swine Program Research Submission Form
Completion of this submission form is required for researchers interested in utilizing the CIPARS On-Farm Swine program infrastructure as a platform to conduct specific research projects. PLEASE NOTE: For consideration in 2008, this submission form must be received by the CIPARS On-Farm Swine Program by: o Dec 19th, 2008 In subsequent years, the annual submission deadline will be November 1st. This submission form IS NOT A FUNDING APPLICATION. Funding for specific research projects is not available through the CIPARS On-Farm Swine program. Projects requiring sampling and/or data collection not included in the existing CIPARS On-Farm program may be required to provide compensation for participating producers, participating veterinarians and/or CIPARS operations. This will be determined based on the degree of additional effort required by each group in order to participate in the project. Projects requiring sampling and/or data collection not included in the existing CIPARS On-Farm program will require specific consent by participating producers, veterinarians, and/or provinces. Other projects may also require specific consent from participants as determined by the Research Review Committee. The CIPARS On-Farm Swine program cannot guarantee or predict the level of participation by CIPARS participants. If approved, researchers will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the roles and responsibilities of both the researcher and the CIPARS OnFarm Program for the duration of the project. At the completion of the project, the CIPARS On-Farm program will require an abstract suitable for inclusion in the CIPARS Annual Report.
The CIPARS On-Farm Swine program has the following structure: The program began enrolling herds in 2006. Nationally 108 sentinel grower-finisher sites are enrolled in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Québec. The number of CIPARS sentinel sites in each province is proportional to their contribution to the national total of grower-finisher units. In Alberta and Saskatchewan the provincial ministries of agriculture provided support for additional herd enrolment in these provinces. Alberta continues to provide this support for 2008. To provide producer anonymity, sample and data collection are performed by participating veterinarians. These veterinarians were purposively selected from provincial sampling frames. Herd selection, according to specified inclusion/exclusion criteria, is performed by the veterinarian. Criteria for inclusion are that the enrolled farm be CQA® validated, that the farm market >2000 hogs/year, and that the farm be representative of the demographic and December 2008 1

geographic distribution of the veterinary practice. Herds to be excluded are organic herds and pasture raised herds, since they do not represent the majority of grower/finisher management in Canada. Fecal samples, antimicrobial use data and a small amount of supplemental information are collected three times per year from each sentinel site. Salmonella, generic E.coli and Enterococcus are cultured from the fecal samples and antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed on the isolates according to standard CIPARS protocols. Refinements to the program are being considered which may impact the number and frequency of samples obtained in 2009 For additional information on the CIPARS On-Farm Swine program or other components of CIPARS, please visit: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/cipars-picra/surv_farm-eng.php (English) or http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/cipars-picra/surv_farm-fra.php (Français) or contact: Dr. Dave Léger Dr. Sheryl Gow Dr. Anne Deckert (519) 826-2275 (306) 966-2232 (519) 826-2160 David_Leger@phac-aspc.gc.ca Sheryl_Gow@phac-aspc.gc.ca Anne_Deckert@phac-aspc.gc.ca
CIPARS On-Farm Swine Research Submission process Please send the completed CIPARS On-Farm Swine Program Research Submission Form in electronic format to Louise Bellai at Louise_Bellai@phac-aspc.gc.ca. Forms received after the deadline will not be considered. The Submission Form will be reviewed by the CIPARS On-Farm Swine Research Review Committee which is a sub-committee of the CIPARS On-Farm Swine Advisory Committee. It is anticipated that the review will be completed in an 8 week period. Researchers will receive correspondence indicating either: Approval of the project; Approval with modifications; or Rejection of the project. A limited number of projects will be accepted in each submission cycle in order to avoid compromising the core program.
