LESSON PLAN FOR FORM 4 ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS ( By Moy Wah Goon ) Form Duration Resources Learning Area :4A : 80 minutes : Additional Mathematics Form 4 by Nur Niaga Sdn Bhd : Simultaneous equations Learning Objectives : Solve simultaneous equations in two unknowns: one linear equation and one non-linear equation Learning Outcomes : The students should be able to solve simultaneous equations involving real-life situations. Pedagogy Values Pre-requisite Knowledge Procedure : Stages/Steps Time alloted Set Induction (10 minutes) Learning and Teaching Activities 1. Students are divided into groups of four. 2. Students are guided to recall using the substitution method to solve simultaneous equations in two unknowns; one linear and one non-linear. Textbook, pages 65-66 Resources/ Remarks : Group discussions : Cooperation : Students have learned the substitution method in solving simultaneous equations. Lesson Step 1 (35 minutes) Development 1. Each group has to complete a worksheet (60 minutes) consisting of 8 real life situations involving two unknowns whereby the students are Worksheet 1 Stages/Steps Time alloted Learning and Teaching Activities required to translate these situations into simultaneous equations in terms of x and y 2. After completing the worksheet, students should be able to translate similar real life situations into simultaneous equations Step 2 ( 25 minutes ) 3. Students are then guided to the concept of solving real life situations involving simultaneous equations in two unknowns; one linear and one non-linear. Resources/ Remarks Example 2 on Page 66-67 Closure (10 minutes) 1. Teacher guides students in summarizing the two important steps in solving simultaneous equations. 2. Students are then asked to practise solving simultaneous equations involving real-life situations to enhance their new skills by referring to the Skill Practices in the textbook and questions in the given worksheet. Practice 2 on page 67, worksheet and chapter review exercise on page 69 2 Worksheet Identify the unknowns for each of the following situations. Using x and y to represent these unknowns, form two simultaneous equations in terms of x and y for each of the situations. [ You are not required to solve the problems] (i) A piece of wire of length 40 cm is used to form a rectangle with an area of 96 cm2 . Form two equations relating the length and width of the rectangle. 96 cm2 (ii) The ages of Subramaniam and Matangong differ by 6 years. The sum of squares of their respective ages is 1476. Form two equations relating the respective ages of Subramaniam and Matangong. (iii) The sum of two numbers is 11. The difference between the squares of the numbers is 77. Form two equations relating the two numbers. (iv) Amin and Chong completed a 200-m race with a time difference of 1.25 minutes. On average, Amin’s speed is faster than Chong’s speed by 8 m per minute. Form two equations relating the two average speeds. 3 (v) Given the difference between two positive numbers is 8 and the sum of squares of these two numbers is 194. Form two equations relating these two numbers. (vi) Given the perimeter of a rectangle is 21 cm. The length of the diagonal of the rectangle is 7.5 cm. Find the length and width of the rectangle. 7.5 cm (vii) A piece of wire of length 32 cm is cut into two pieces. Each piece of the wire is then bent into the shape of a square. If the total area of the two squares formed is 34 cm2 , find the length of each piece of the cut wire. (viii) Two types of vases are on sale. Each type-B vase is RM2 cheaper than type-A vase. Sharifah found out that with RM120, she could get an extra 3 units of the cheaper vases. What are the unit cost of each type of the vases ? 4
