From an environmental aspect, the pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores during production of non-ferrous metals causes considerable problems because this method results in extensive air contamination by escaping sulfur dioxide, solid contaminants, and other air pollutants. If these pollutants are toxic, such as antimony and arsenic, the hydrometallurgical processes are apparently superior to the pyrometallurgical processes in extracting non-ferrous metals and treating the secondary materials.
