Fine Motor Skills Tracing & Cutting Hand/Eye Coordination Name: __________________________ Date: __________________________ www.staidenshomeschool.com © 2008 2 Fine Motor Skills, Writing Practice & Eye-Hand Coordination Young children should learn how to use and control their large and small muscles. Large muscles are used to perform physical movements, e.g. walking, crawling, jumping and hopping etc, while fine muscles are needed for completing more detailed exercises, such as drawing, writing, cutting and picking up small objects, etc. In order to progress academically, a child should gain control over his/her fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. There are a number of activities and games that can be done at home to help the child. Suggested Activities: 1. Tracing Practice 2. Cutting Practice Additional suggestions: 3. Jigsaw puzzles are a fun way to increase eye-hand coordination. Use puzzles of a few pieces each initially, and then slowly, as the child grows in confidence, increase the puzzlepieces. Puzzles can be made by cutting pictures out of magazines or newspapers. 4. Young children love to play with clay. They can either make pictures or letters with clay. Home-made clay, if covered and refrigerated, will keep longer. 5. Newspaper cuttings and coupon clipping are economical ways to help your child develop eye-hand coordination. Older children can cut out letters or words from newspapers and magazines. The Foundation Stage of education is concerned with the developing of key learning skills, which include basic motor skills, early communication, literacy, and numeracy skills that will prepare young children and ensure that they will continue to flourish throughout their school years and beyond. In this book we focus on tracing and cutting patterns only from very simple exercises to more difficult ones for older children. WHY TEACH HANDWRITING? Writing is vital to communicating in school, in public life and internationally. It enables pupils to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. Pupils learn to become enthusiastic and critical writers of stories, poetry and drama as well as non-fiction and media texts. Reading and writing forms the basis of all learning. Handwriting is crucial to being able to communicate effectively as a writer.
