Practicum Waiver may be granted if a student demonstrates prior, appropriate, professional work
experience in an accredited or credentialed library, media, or information center. TWU SLIS Faculty
Advisors have the authority to approve or deny all Practicum Waiver requests. Students must
complete the process by submitting the required documentation [listed below] to their TWU SLIS
Faculty Advisors. If a Practicum Waiver is approved, the SLIS Faculty Advisor will work with the
student to select an alternate LS course to fulfill the 36-hour requirement for graduation.
Students may be approved for a School Librarian Waiver by providing official documentation from a
School Library or Media Center that confirms employment for one year as the “librarian of record”
and demonstrates proficiency in the professional duties of the position.
NOTE: (b) Each preparation program must develop and implement specific criteria and procedures
that allow admitted individuals to substitute experience and/or professional training directly related
to the standards identified in §239.55 of this subchapter for part of the preparation coursework or
other program requirements. Rule 239.55 lists these standards:
STEPS TO TAKE TO SECURE A PRACTICUM WAIVER:
1. Consult with your TWU SLIS Faculty Advisor to determine that you may qualify for a
2. Prepare a written request for Practicum Waiver to identify your specific experience in a
media, library, or information center, and submit this document to your TWU SLIS
3. Provide official documentation from the Library, Media or Information Center (letterhead
required) that confirms employment for one year and that demonstrates your proficiency
in the professional duties of that position. The letter must be submitted to your TWU
SLIS Faculty Advisor.
NOTE: If approved, a Practicum Waiver Form (internal TWU SLIS document) will be completed by
your TWU SLIS Faculty Advisor and submitted directly to the TWU SLIS Director’s Office. At that
time, consult with your Faculty Advisor to substitute an appropriate course in place of LS5843
Practicum. Submit a "CHANGE OF DEGREE PLAN" in your final semester prior to graduation
indicating the course taken in lieu of Practicum along with any other changes to your Degree Plan.
