                                     ABSTRACT


Eny Nur Rahmawati, 2008: The Speaking Ability of the Eighth Year Students at
       SMP N 1 Jatirogo – Tuban, Advisor: Dra. Christina ITP., M.Pd.

Key Words                    : Study, Mastery, Speaking Ability or Oral Speaking.


       As language has on important in national development, English has become one
of the subjects which is taught in educational institution. The ability to speak a
foreign language is considered important besides the ability to speak our native
language.
       The purpose of this study is to find out the speaking ability of the eighth year
students at SMP N I Jatirogo.
       In this research, the writer uses the descriptive design. It means that the writer
only describes the students’ speaking ability. The target population of this study is the
eighth year students of SMP N I Jatirogo. There are many students and because of the
large number of students, the writer takes forty students who are at the eighth year as
the sample of this study. The data of this study are collected by using an oral test and
interview to the students. The interview is given to the students to obtain additional
information about the speaking ability of the students. And the result was obtained by
using percentage to analyze.
       The result of the study indicates that most of the sample (eighth year students)
have enough ability to speak. The percentage of the students who get the best score,
that is “A” is 5%. The students who get “B” is 30%, the students who get “C” is 55%,
the students who get “D” is 10%, and the percentage of “E” is 0%. The mean score of
the students is 3,5 or C/ average.
       After knowing the result of the study, the writer gave some suggestion to
improve the students’ speaking ability. The teacher is expected to be able to stimulate
the students to learn more actively and to be more enthusiastic, especially in
increasing fluency and comprehension. Because they have low score for fluency (D/
2,6) and comprehension (D/ 2,9). The writer also gives suggestions to the students
and researchers and she hopes that her study will enrich the knowledge of the readers
of this skripsi related to speaking ability.

                              ACKNOWLEDGEMENT


        Thanks to Allah SWT, who gives the writer guidance so that she is able to

finish “skripsi” although there are many problems in finishing it, but the writer is

very confident to write finally. As a matter of the fact, at the beginning of making this

skripsi, she had some troubles with the title, references and the data but the writer is

able to solve them all.

        Secondly, the writer would like to say thanks to her advisor Dra. Cristina ITP.

M.Pd, who guides her and always gives some suggestions and corrections in writing

this “skripsi”.

        Thanks a lot of teacher of “SMP N I Jatirogo”, who permits her to research at

his ncollege. She will not forget his kindness. She will not forget to say thanks a lot to

the students at SMP N I Jatirogo who help her to do the research.

        Besides those, she is also quite greateful to her dear parents, sisters (Wowol,

Iva & Ila), cousins (M’nin, Ceni, Ofa) and all of his beloved families who have given

the support, love and guidance. For my special inspirator (Mz Uman Cyang……)

thanks for love, support and everything.

        Lastly, she also parents her gratitude to her friends, all members of UKM

BIORA, Typist (Lek Ariez), all of her classmates, and the people who work with him

every day.
