Energy and Environmental award for plastic manufacturer The will to save energy - Rewarded R. Færch Plast A/S of Holstebro, DK, a manufacturer of packaging for the food processing industry, was on Tuesday 23 February 1999, rewarded with the much sought after “Energy and Environmental Award”. Through this, Faerch will join other prominent recipients such as Tulip International, Carlsberg and Irma. This is the 16th time this award has been presented. The price was presented by the former Minister of Energy, Jens Bilgrav Nielsen at the annual meeting for the Danish “Association of Energy and Environment”. Among the reasons for choosing Færch Plast as this year’s winner, was the company’s attitude and aptitude in converting their plans for saving energy into reality. Even though plastic companies in general have a high- energy consumption. Færch Plast has at the same time managed to involve both the internal as well as the external environment through an objective effort. Faerch Plast was recently, the first Danish company, to receive a hygiene certificate from the independent English certificate organ ADAS, thus completing the picture of a Danish manufacturer, who takes responsibility towards the Environment and Energy seriously – and acts on it. The “Energy and Environment Award” was instituted by the Association for Energy and Environment, previously the Association for Energy Control, initially funded by Danish Ministry for Energy. The purpose of the Association is to be an open non-political council for discussion and exchange of knowledge relating to Energy and Environmental issues, such as efficient consumption of energy, energy management, finance and energy saving process. The association is represented in various management groups and committees, relevant for Danish Energy and Environmental questions. Immediate-Reward One of the reasons for the award is Faerch Plast’s participation in the “ Project for Energy Awareness”. When planning a major expansion, the management of Færch decided to take environmental considerations from the beginning and therefore asked for expert advise from the Danish Office of Energy, Confederation of Danish Industry and the consulting engineering company Carl Bro. The investigation proved that energy worth almost DKK 700,000. This objective is currently on target. Faerch Plast was the first in Denmark to see “ Project for Energy Awareness”through. The energy saving ethos has permeated throughout the company and the upcoming further expansion of approximately 18.000 sqm. will also be included in the project, so saving energy will be optimised. “We see this award as an acknowledgement of all the hard work that went into saving energy, environment and hygiene”, says Faerch Plast’s Managing Director Heinrich Küsch. “-Internally we know that we put a lot of effort into creating products of a high quality, but at the same time we are extremely aware of the consumption of energy. Seen from my position, there is a lot of honour and also a challenge in maintaining and, if possible, improving what we have now started.” “-The best part is that, it is the production employees, who from the beginning pointed out, how we would be able to save energy and persistently reminded us we had an obligation to do it. The award therefore symbolises a strong team spirit and will. In this way I feel that we seriously live up to one of our slogans: We look after what is inside – and everything around it”.
