Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is a roadmap for the reader; it tells the reader what to expect throughout the rest of the paper.
It is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader.

It is important that your thesis capture the reader’s attention. It should be specific to what the body of your
paper will address.
Examples:

The North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different.

                                                        or

While both sides fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery, the North fought for moral reasons while the
South fought to preserve its own institutions.

                                                        or

While both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against tyranny and oppression, Northerners
focused on the oppression of slaves while Southerners defended their own right to self-government.

 Which of the three is the best thesis? Why?

Outline
In order to have a well-organized paper, you need to create a working outline of the material you will be
addressing throughout the paper. An outline details what your final paper will look like. In addition, an outline
can help you to organize your thoughts and help you to see obstacles that you may encounter when researching
or writing your paper.

Example:

The Stock Market Crash of 1929

I. Causes of crash

Note Cards
Use 4x6 index cards (can use 3x5) to write down the information that you are using from your research. Note
cards should be used for the following: quotations and paraphrased/summarized material. Remember, your note
card is for writing pieces of information NOT paragraphs of information.

Quotation- Copying the original text, word-for-word.
Paraphrase- Re-writing material in your own words.
Summary- record the main idea of the material/passage in your own words.
Guidelines:
   1. At the top of each card, write a heading that summarizes the main idea of the info you are writing about.
These headings help you to sort your cards when writing your draft.
   2. In the upper, right-hand corner write the # of the source card in which the information can be found.
   3. At the bottom, write whether the information is a quote, paraphrase, or summary of the material.
   4. At the end of the note, write the page # where the information came from.

Example:

                      Note Card

                                           Source #
