COLUMBIA BOOSTER CLUB MINUTES
November, 23, 2009
The meeting was called to order by Deanna Ducheneaux, President at 6:00 p.m. at CJH’s
library. The meeting was attended by the following 11people; Deanna Ducheneaux,
Shelley Werner, Melinda Shaw, Tract Mozzone, Steve McCammon, Jeff Short, Jeff
Nelson, Kari Harris, Marjorie Dickson, Sheila Lujan, and Lynn Marciano
A motion was made by Shelley Werner to approve last meetings minutes. The motion
was seconded by Sheila Lujan.
Deanna reported that expenses were $495.96 for the 9th grade dance, $414.49 for
concessions, $32.14 for miscellaneous, orientation $844.00, and $1,541.28 for student
store. The ending checking account balance is $13,428.21.
Dr. McCammon explained to everyone about the upcoming levies. The traditional levy
that we usually ask for every four years is called a Maintenance and Operational Levy,
but we are changing the name to Educational Programs and Operations Levy which is
also called a Replacement Levy. This levy keeps class sizes low, facility maintenance,
and textbooks. The Technology Levy is our other one but it is a reinstatement levy of
$900,000 for the first four years and is stretched out over 6 years. Divide it among
homes in our area and it equals about $2.21 per homeowner. Median homes are
around $200,000. The Tech Levy is $3.6 million over 6 years for an average of $5.00 a
month for the average homeowner. Puyallup School District is $3.40 per $1,000 for
their education levy which is 90 cents more per 1,000. The Port of Tacoma supports us
and Tacoma. It will take 50% plus one to pass the levy. We are advertising our first ever
Science and Technology Fair to be held at CJH in January. If people have questions
regarding the levies they can walk through and see what is in use. In regards to social
networking in one week we have 114 fans on our Face book page. My job is to supply
the best education for our kids. My son has experienced rich technology for the past 6
years that is always cutting edge.
Marjorie along with Melinda Shaw has partnered to get the word about our levies. The
deadline is January 11th to register to vote. Encourage your friends to vote. Timeline is
to educate before our local population begins to vote. We need man/woman power to
support this levy. Most important message is two yes votes. Our kids will be neglected
if they don’t get these tools for the future. Marjorie passed out another page that is for
people who speak other languages to get out there and vote. Melinda passed out a
flyer that has all of the basic information.
Some highlights are that five of our teachers passed the National School Boards, three
of them here at CJH. The teachers are Mr. Scheidt, Mrs. Aker, and Mr. Moseley. This is a
rigorous venture and takes a lot of effort. Please check out our school blog on our
website. He thanked everyone for the meals and treats that have been provided by the
Booster Club. We had a wonderful and successful Veterans Assembly. Four students
read their poems, and a dad presented memorable coins. He was proud of how are kids
rallied to show their support. Students of the quarter were celebrated for the trait of
respect at an after school event which had better attendance than having it before
school. Arena conferences had long lines but that just means that there were a lot of
interested parents. Last week principals McKnight, McCrossin, and Nelson, along with
two teachers visited the Bethel School District. They have some tremendous science,
math, and technology programs. New test replacing the WASL will be done on the
computer and could be done in about 2 days. There are enough computers and laptops
to easily accommodate students at CJH. Progress reports will go home with students on
December 8th. Our band concert will be on December 10th. The science/technology fair
will be on January 21st with all of the schools participating.
Albertson’s/Escrip (Safeway) Cards
Sheila Lujan said in brief all was going well. She will send out cards to Escript users
thanking them for signing up and supporting the school. They will receive the thank you
before the holiday season.
CJH Legacy Tiles
All is going good.
Position is still open. Rented it for turkey jamboree and made $50.
Rita will need to order in the spring
This will be held on January 29th. Mr. Nelson gave permission to send envelopes home
with the students. There will be a call out to families, and information will be in our
newsletter. Fife Flowers made a bouquet for the auction for the original date. After
speaking with them and apologizing for the confusion they agreed to make another one
for the new date. It was suggested that there be a $5.00 discount if someone purchases
enough tickets for an entire table. Special invitations will be given to the board
members. We need a lot of parents, so get the word out.
9th Grade Dance
After the holidays work will start on this.
There were so many pies for the staff, and they were very appreciative. In December
Dawn Marie will set up for gift wrapping for staff Christmas presents. The staff was so
excited for this. She has three days set aside for this, the 4th, 11th, and the 18 th. All
agree this is a great idea.
The Booster club will get something for the teachers who passed the boards.
Position is still open. Marcy is still shopping for the store. Shelley is doing the schedule.
A discussion took place about reactivating Costco Card Membership.
