Clean Tech: What’s Hot in 2009?
Clean tech has been one of the hottest investments across the globe. There’s a compelling reason: Asia has seen unprecedented strain on its natural resources and governments recognize the need to reduce their countries’ dependence on fossil fuels. Investors in India pumped $290 million into clean tech compared with $140 million in 2006, according to Deloitte. Deloitte expects private equity and venture capital to inject $3.5 billion more into India’s clean tech in the next few years. Momentum is expected to continue in Asia, Europe, and North America thanks to government initiatives and policy favorable to clean tech. In “Intellectual Property Protection in a Globalizing Era,” Senior Research Economist and Advisor Edwin Lai says two factors influence nations’ incentives to protect intellectual property: the capacity to innovate and the size of the targeted market. Both factors have created tensions between technology-rich developed countries and developing nations. IP protection is important because IP-sensitive goods contribute a great deal to the global economy. A native of Belgium, Jacques joined USVP in 2005 as Venture Executive. Jacques focuses on fostering USVP position as an active investor in the Israeli market where the firm currently has 6 portfolio companies. Jacques serves as executive chairman of Synfora and Certess and works with portfolio companies such as Dune, Trusteer, Yoomba, and Kilopass. Before joining USVP, Jacques was CEO of Monterey Design Systems from 1999 and until its acquisition by Synopsys in 2004. Prior to that, he founded and served as general manager of the European subsidiary of Epic Design Technology and participated in the company’s IPO. Prior to that , Jacques worked at IMEC in Belgium, at IBM’s Scientific Center in Israel at ST Microelectronics in France and Italy. Giles has over twenty years experience in the investment industry. In early 2002, Giles and Glover Lawrence founded McNamee Lawrence & Co. (MLC) in Boston to provide advisory and investment banking services to exciting but overlooked technology companies. Giles and Glover announced their first transaction in June 2002, the $78 million sale of CBS Payroll Services to Intuit. In the more than five years since founding, MLC has advised more than 50 clients and closed more than 30 transactions. Before joining H&Q, Giles worked for ten years with First Albany Corporation where he served as a Senior Vice President/Director of Institutional Equities and was a member of the Equity Management Committee. At the start of his career, he was a Partner at Hawthorne Securities, a Boston-based equity trading firm. He is an active angel investor, investing in several dozen private companies over the years.
