4-Year-Old Kindergarten News
We have had a very busy fall so far. We learned about how the seasons change. Then
we had a fun field trip to visit the Spencer School Forest. It was great weather and every-
one found neat signs of fall to bring home with them!
We have been exploring community workers. We visited the Spencer Fire Station and learned
about fire safety. Thank you firefighters for educating us! We visited the Spencer SuperValu and
saw the ins and outs of a grocery store. A special thank for giving us the tour and for the delicious
donuts to snack on! We walked to the municipal building and saw the Police Department, Village
Office and Public Library, then walked to the Spencer Post Office. Thank you community workers for
letting us visit and showing us around! We certainly have a lot of community workers here
in Spencer!! Now we know some of the careers we can have when we get older.

Dear Parent(s),
Spencer School District is continuing the Project SUCCESS program for the 2007-08 school year. The program is funded
by a grant from the Department of Public Instruction. The goals of the program are to improve school performance and
prevent and reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. To accomplish these goals Spencer School District has hired
me (Kimberli Dammann) as their Project SUCCESS counselor. I will provide intensive counseling and early intervention
services including: individual assessment, individual and group counseling, as well as partnering with parents and refer-
ring students to community resources as needed.
As the Project SUCCESS counselor, I will be responsible for implementing and coordinating Project SUCCESS. I have
years of experience working with adolescents. Currently, I also work as an elementary school counselor for the Marsh-
field School District. I will be at Spencer School District two days a week to conduct Project SUCCESS services.
In order to assess the effectiveness of Project SUCCESS, I will be asking your student to participate in a pre and post
survey to measure changes in attitudes and behaviors. The survey will be given after each student has participated in a
series of four prevention education groups and then again at the end of the school year. The survey is confidential.
Your child’s and the school’s privacy are protected. A copy of the survey is available at my office for your review.
We are hopeful that Project SUCCESS will be effective and hope that you will allow your child/children to participate in
the program.
If you DO NOT want your child to participate in Project SUCCESS please return the attached form to
the guidance office by November 1, 2007.
Sincerely,
Kimberli Dammann

The Spencer PTA proudly announces participation in the National PTA’s
REFLECTIONS ART PROGRAM
The program provides an opportunity for children to explore the world of the Arts, either at home or
in the classroom. Students preschool through 12 are eligible to submit original works in four areas:
Literature Visual Arts Musical Composition Photography
Entries are recognized and judged by grade divisions:
Primary PreK-2nd Intermediate 3rd-5th Middle/Jr 6th-8th Senior 9th-12th
The original works are judged at the local, state, then at the national level.
Each year, the Reflections Program challenges students to create art that supports a
specific theme. This year’s theme is “I Can Make a Difference By...”
Entries must be the original work of only one student; assistance from teachers, par-
ents, or friends is not permitted. Students should try to do their best work; however, crooked lines
and misspelled words do not disqualify anyone. Entries may be done within the classroom or at
home. Check with your child’s teacher if they plan on doing something in the classroom.
Mrs. Thomas will have visual arts supplies in her room. The PTA will provide the supplies needed
for the entry forms (manila envelopes and sheet protectors).
I am asking for your support of “The Arts in Education” by encouraging your students to become
involved in the Reflections Program. If your child is interested, you may contact me for further de-
tails and official rules, or you may read the rules that are posted by the Elementary Office area.
You might want to check out the program and previous years award winners by visiting the Par-
ent Involvement area of National PTA’s website at www.pta.org and look in Family Fun area for
the Reflections Program.
Entries are due November 27th. All entries need to have the official entry form, signed by the par-
ent to be eligible for the program. The entry forms and the box for completed entries are located
in the Elementary Office.
Supporting the Reflections Program is one way to enhance “The Arts” in our
school and community. Please feel free to ask any questions that you may
have. I can be reached at 223-4444. I look forward to seeing the all the creative
works of art made by our students. This year’s theme should be a fun one! I am
proud to support The Arts in Spencer Schools. Thank you.

Where Girls Grow Strong
Fans of Spencer Boys Basketball,
The Spencer Rocket Boys Hoops Club is excited about the up-coming basketball season.
What a great 2007 season “SOUTH MARAWOOD CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS” !
Our purpose is to provide support to Spencer Boys Basketball teams. We have asked local business
leaders to represent themselves as supporters by purchasing ad space to be displayed on the cover
of all home game programs.
We invite all Spencer Rocket fans to join in the sponsorship of the programs. All supporters’ names
will be listed in the printed programs.
The requested minimum donation as a supporter for the 2007-2008 Boys Basketball
printed program is $10.00.
So what is the Spencer Rocket Boys Hoops Club all about? Through various fundraisers, we
have purchased new uniforms, warm up jackets, equipment, and playground hoops, paid for sum-
mer league and tournament entry fees. Spencer is part of a summer league program; which we sup-
port by paying fees and officials. This is all accomplished by continuing to volunteer our time and by
the generous support of community business leaders, parents and all Spencer Rocket Fans.
A response is needed by November 9th in order to meet our publishing date. Send checks or
money order, payable to Boys Basketball Hoops Club to Wendell Phillips at the address below, or
they may be dropped off at the school office and directed to Coach Reckner’s mailbox.
If you are interested in participating in the Hoops Club please feel free to call me or Coach Reckner.

Counselor’s Corner
Hi, my name is Katrina Eisfeldt and I am the new 8-12 school counselor. I live in Neillsville with my husband and
three children. Last year I was the Project SUCCESS Counselor at Spencer and over the summer I moved into
this role. I am very excited to be working at Spencer School District!
The following are items that I am working on with the students:
Seniors – Individual college & career planning. Seniors should be (some already have) applying to colleges and
technical schools at this time. Each student is required to meet with me individually to discuss their future
plans.
Juniors – Juniors were informed of graduation requirements and college requirements earlier this year. Juniors
will be required to meet with me individually as well to make sure they are on the right path for graduation and
future plans. Juniors should be signing up to take the ACT test. The following are the tests dates and deadlines
to register. Juniors can pick up the ACT packet in the school counseling office.
Test Date Registration Deadline

February 9, 2008** January 4, 2008

Sophomores – Twenty-four sophomores signed up to take the PLAN test (the pre-test for the ACT). Results of
this test will be sent home. The results also include an estimated ACT score.
Freshmen – Freshman will be required to meet with me individually as well to make sure they are on the right
track for college and graduation requirements.
8th Grade – I have started developmental school counseling in the 8th grade health classes. Communication
skills, drug and alcohol refusal skills, responsibility, education planning (including knowledge of career and col-

PK-7 School Counselor
Students, Parents and Teachers “Team up to Make Healthy Choices.”
We had a great turn out for our 7th annual Red Ribbon Week “Walk Away From Drugs”
again this year. Thanks to all the parents who came out for a healthy walk with us on a nice
brisk fall day. Many parents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, grandparents, uncles, aunts and
other important adults also pledged to be good role models and help their student make healthy
choices. Your support is greatly appreciated. Also a big thank you goes to our High School
BLAST (Being a Leader and Standing Tall) students who helped make the walk happen and
walked together with our elementary students. Our theme this year was “Team up to Make
Healthy Choices.” We know that kids who stay involved in safe, fun groups, teams and activities are more
likely to stay healthy and drug free.
Small Counseling Groups Available
Small counseling groups will be starting soon for students in 4th, 5th & 6th grades. Students can be a
great resource for one another when they find they are going through similar issues and looking to gain
skills. Topics available will be: Tools of the Trade: a study skills group, Changing Places: a group for stu-
dents with family changes, Chillin': a group for students interested in managing their anger in safe ways,
Standin' up: a group for students interested in working on being more assertive and feeling more self confi-
dent. Other topics may be added as needed. Students will be given a short check list in class to indicate
whether or not they feel they may benefit from being in a small counseling group. Students can refer them-
selves to group and teachers and parents also refer students. Groups meet once a week and take place during
study halls and lunch. Groups typically last 6-9 weeks. Kindergarten social skills groups will be starting in the
beginning of November and run the entire year. The focus of these groups is empathy training, anger man-

"Play Fair" Available on the K-4 Playground
We have a great group of 6th grade students who have been trained to lead coopera-
tive games on the K-4 playground. Play Fair takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
11:35 to 12:05 and is available to any student K-4 looking for a fun, non-competitive game
to join in on. Play Fair is designed to promote inclusion, reinforce positive social skills, re-
duce problem behavior on the playground and promote cooperative play. It also gives the
6th grade students a great opportunity to be in a leadership role and utilizes their poten-
tial to help other kids. When students see the orange cones and kids with the orange vests out on the play-
ground, they know it's a Play Fair day!
